When it comes to individual differences in servant leadership, regarding roles of values and personality, Washington, Sutton, and Hubert (2006) found that in their study “Followers ratings of leaders’ servant leadership were positively related to the followers ratings’ of leaders’ values of empathy, integrity and competence. Followers’ ratings of leaders’ servant leadership were also positively related to leaders ratings of their own agreeableness” (p. 700).  Other servant leadership characteristics worthy of emulation include listening, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, commitment to the growth of people, and building community (Spears, 2010).I was brought up in a devout Christian family, and I remember my father talking seriously about joining the ministry to serve others when I was young.  At church, it was all about humility and service. I leaned to serves others by listening, by showing empathy and by being part of the healing process.  In healthcare, I continue to use the personal value of being aware of reality, listening, showing empathy, integrity, and empowering staff. I currently work in behavior health, and I am constantly requesting for adequate staff, for staff and patient protection. It could be potentially dangerous to have a severely psychotic, homicidal, or suicidal patient running amok on the unit without adequate staff support. I show confidence and competence by proactively deescalating patient and teaching staff how to do it with non-aggressive techniques. I lead by example, and try not to put staff in harms way. I have been successful in encouraging some psychiatric technicians to go back to school. Some have followed my advice and are currently nurses. I feel a sense of joy when I see the progress some of them have made.Think about how your personal values correlate with the principles of servant leadership.
