Assignment 2: LASA 1: Protecting Children From Media

For his 10th birthday, Greg was given a handheld videogame system. His parents allowed him to pick any two games. They knew the games might contain violence, because there was a violence rating sign posted on the games, but rationalized that they were only games and other kids play them. Greg would quickly finish dinner and run up to his room to play his games. His parents were pleased to observe that Greg enjoyed their present so much. After a week, his parents noticed that he wasn’t turning off the videogames at bedtime, and had begun turning homework in late. He was up so late playing that he would not get up for school without argument. His parents decided that enough was enough and took the video games away. Greg threw temper tantrums and persuaded his parents to buy him a computer after convincing them that it was necessary to keep up at school. Greg soon returned to the same pattern of behavior where he spent long hours and late nights at the computer. This time, his parents felt a false sense of security that he was doing his homework. One day, his curious parents decided to scan the computer history to see what Web sites Greg was browsing. To their horror, they discovered that Greg was spending many hours online playing interactive, sometimes violently graphic, games on the Internet. He was also chatting with other “gamers”. Before confronting Greg about his behavior, his mother and father agreed to investigate what types of intervention strategies might be available within their community. They have come to you, a behavioral consultant, for advice.Describe the issue of exposure to videogame violence in today’s society as related to Greg’s situation. Forum Post Why does it appear that police are using too much force on the job?

Forum Post  Why does it appear that police are using too much force on the job? What are the relationships among community policing, problem-oriented policing, and intelligence-led policing? Are they similar or fundamentally different?Explain.  2 Replies  1st Reply   By the vary nature of their jobs, officers are called upon throughout their careers to play mediator in many volatile situations, to take action when laws are violated, and to apprehend traffic violators.  At any given time, one of these scenarios can require the use of some type of force or control by an officer.  Departmental policy, authorized equipment, formal training, and an officer’s faith in his or her abilities dictate the amount and type of force officers might use.  Most cops think that the public underestimates the threats to their life, and why the use of force is sometimes necessary. Most of the officers interviewed say that guns poison policing in America. “They’re literally everywhere,” says one. “And the problem with dealing with guns is that if I’m talking to you and you’ve got a gun, action always beats reaction.” One female street cop points that having to carry a firearm automatically escalates violent situations. “If I take a punch and I’m knocked out, they could take my gun,” she says. “We need to stay a step ahead of them, so we sometimes use a higher-level of force.” Another worries that the fear of being criticized or indicted for using force may make cops put themselves in danger. “I think what’s happening now is that some younger officers are more reluctant to use force and they might lose a tactical advantage and be killed.” (Policing in America). Community policingis a philosophy that promotes organizational strategies that support the systematic use of partnerships and problem-solving techniques to proactively address the immediate conditions that give rise to public safety issues such as crime, social disorder, and fear of crime. Problem-oriented policing is an approach to policing in which discrete pieces of police business are subject to microscopic examination, in hopes that what is freshly learned about each problem will lead to discovering a new and more effective strategy for dealing with it. Intelligence Led policing is a policing model built around the assessment and management of risk. All three policing programs are used by police officers when handling the community. Their focus is better strategies and problem solving.   Policing in America; what the cops say. Apr 27th 2015, 19:13 BY D.K. | WASHINGTON, DC    Siegel, Larry J. & Worrall, John L. (2013). . 14 ed. It not a matter of why now because it has been going on technology is just bringing it to the forefront. According to Lyons (2015) police are police to reinforce community norms and intervening when those norms are violated but that’s not what we are seeing today. Community policing as stated by Lyons (2015)  depends heavily on voluntary compliance with the law and community norms which, in turn, depend on community perceptions of the legitimacy of the police as an institution. Furthermore, trust and trustworthiness of government authority, as personified by the police. With that being said I think its safe to say that today’s community especially the black community has no trust in law enforcement. Today more than ever police are to be feared because even doing the right thing can get you killed.Community policing, problem-oriented policing, and intelligence-led policing all different but similar community policing is a strategy of policing that focuses on police building ties and working closely with members of the communities. While problem-oriented policing seeks to identify the underlying causes of crime problems and to frame appropriate responses using a wide variety of innovative approaches which proves to be effective in controlling a wide range of specific crime and disorder problems, such as convenience store robberies. Intelligence-led policing (ILP) is an assessment and management of risk model that intelligence officers serve as guides to operations, rather than operations guiding intelligence. While each category does something different they all tactics used by law enforcement to ensure they are doing their job to reduce crime and improve their tactical strategy.Lyons, P. (2015).
