Bioinformatics Algorithms

There are n bacteria and 1 virus in a Petri dish. Within the first minute, the virus kills one bacterium and produces another copy of itself, and all of the remaining bacteria reproduce, making 2 viruses and 2 · (n − 1) bacteria. In the second minute, each of the viruses kills a bacterium and produces a new copy of itself (resulting in 4 viruses and 2(2(n − 1) − 2) = 4n − 8 bacteria; again, the remaining bacteria reproduce. This process continues every minute. Will the viruses eventually kill all the bacteria? If so, design an algorithm that computes how many steps it will take. How does the running time of your algorithm depend on n? Given a long text string T, one shorter pattern string s, and an integer k, find the first occurrence in T of a string (if any) s such that dH(s, s ) ≤ k. What is the complexity of your algorithm? Given a long text string T, one shorter pattern string s, and an integer k, find the first occurrence in T of a string (if any) s such that dH(s, s ) ≤ k. Visual (Formal) Analysis Paper

One of the more traditional assignments students encounter in an introductory Art History class is to write a visual (formal) analysis paper.  This assignment, which is based on the student’s visit to the Lowe Art Museum on the University of Miami campus in Coral Gables, whose permanent collection contains Greek pottery from the time period that we are studying in Unit 2, requires students to trace the development of Greek pottery, by examining the various techniques and quality of naturalism that evolved over the course of approximately four centuries.   Students will select four objects in the collection to analyze: one (1) from the Geometric period; one (1) from the Orientalizing period; one (1) object utilizing the black-figure technique; and one (1) utilizing the red-figure technique.  Pay close attention to each of the object’s stylistic features, describing each element and integrating into your analyses comparisons to object(s) we have studied in the textbook or in lecture from the PowerPoints.  When selecting objects to compare the Lowe museum pieces to, be discerning. That is, try to find objects that share more characteristics than not.    The aim of this 5-7 page (excluding printed imagery of the objects, which may be either wrapped in the text or placed at the end of the document and labeled), double-spaced, typed assignment is for students to develop an eye for style and locate the subtle differences that distinguish one technique or tendency from another.  As such, the paper should be organized with an introductory paragraph, body, and conclusion. The introduction may include some general information (e.g., historical, economic, cultural) about the objects’ specific time period(s), and the technique(s) utilized to create the object(s). More importantly, the introduction should include a thesis statement.      Be sure to organize the body in a logical, analytic fashion, and conclude the paper with some remarks about the significance of the objects — that is, how they fit into a larger Greco-Roman art historical framework.  Remember, this is NOT a research paper; however, if you quote a source (e.g., a placard or web site from the museum), be certain to include a citation.

You will start working on a portion of your capstone portfolio in this first week. Consider what you have learned about the criminal justice system throughout your degree program.

Name, define and discuss the roles of the three main components of the criminal justice system. Choose the component you think is the most effective and discuss why. Then, choose the component you feel is the least effective and needs to be changed. Discuss the specific changes you would make to the chosen component and why these changes would make it more effective if implemented. Your response should be 1-2 pages in APA format.

The end of the Civil War left the United States in tatters. The southern states that had seceded from the Union in the interests of preserving the right to own slaves were devastated economically from four years of war. Critical Reflection 1 – An Introduction to  as a Concept and a Construct & The Concept of WhitenessCritical Reflection PapersGeneral Instructions Each week we cover a variety of topics falling in the larger thematic area of our class. At times, we view part of a film or a documentary or other forms of media, including written material. Other times we’ll simply be reflecting on our discussion and lecture material. My questions/issues posed to you (overall) ask that you apply your critical thinking skills to discuss the themes in question with what we’re reading and talking about in class. These Critical Reflections are meant only to help you think through the issues we’re grappling with in class, so there usually will be no direct right or wrong answer. A solid paper engages our reading assignments along with the media text(s) in question and class discussion. Remember it’s an open format: I want to see how you’re digesting the material, but you will need to remember to engage  of the material for each topic. That said, please do not give me the answer you think I seek from you. Also, this is not a journal – it’s a thoughtful, college-level essay.Rather, use your critical thinking skills to discuss how it deals with the various representation(s). For instance, if you’re writing a paper on a clip from a series of commercials you watch, you would write about how they ‘deal’ with sex and sexuality. Is it a clear focus? How so? Again, your critical reflections are not graded on a right or wrong basis. I want you to have fun with these. Include a critical examination of what your reaction is to the text and its subject matter. An important question to ask yourself is, “What am I getting out of this?” The questions I pose to you will attempt to elicit these responses. After reviewing the from last week, and the videos today about Whiteness, reflect now about things you learned. A suggestion is to return to the Presentation and review slide by slide. Which slides/videos affected you the most? Why and in what way? After you’ve written out your thoughts about the presentation, write a personal reflection about your reaction (or reactions) to the presentation overall. What did you think about the various slides? What did you learn? Pay particular attention to what was hard to watch or to what was challenging for you. Was any of it boring? Why? Was any of it funny? Why? While this is a personal reflection, do not soapbox or write solely on how you justify your personal perspective. Spend time with the material and discuss it intellectually, citing thoroughly and thoughtfully throughout. Be sure to also review the . Pick three slides and write a more focused reflection on the above questions. Use specific examples and cite where appropriate. 2-3 pages – that is, no less than two, no more than three. Follow the writing guidelines in the syllabus. Prezi: Videos:
