Choose a speech (one with video and audio) from the 100 top speeches found on the American Rhetoric website (www.americanrhetoric.com). When you get to this website, be sure you click Top 100 Speeches. Then under About This Site Area, click The Top 100 Speeches again.
At a minimum, write a one to two page essay (introduction, two supporting paragraphs, and conclusion) in which you analyze the speech.
In your introduction, explain a little about the speaker, his/her background, the occasion for the speech, any conflicts in which the speaker found himself/herself, and the goals of the speech.
Then, devote one supporting paragraph to analyzing the speechs content and meaning. What is the thesis (main idea) of the speech? What major points did the speaker make to support this thesis?
Next, devote the second supporting paragraph to analyzing the speakers effectiveness. Was the speaker persuasive? Why or why not? Did the speaker demonstrate credibility? If so, how?
For your conclusion, discuss the impact of the speech, what you learned from the speech about the subject and about the speaker.
Your essay will be evaluated for essay structure, content (analysis of speaker/speech), and grammar. Proofread carefully before submitting.
