The Politics of Everyday Life: Important Quotidian Hidden Stuff

Elsa Lopez graduated in politics at the Monterrey Institute of Technology but now works as a cleaner in Los Angeles for the Relaxation Hotel. Its part of a global chain of hotels and serviced apartments thats recently purchased AirBnB. Shes grateful for the job, being an undocumented migrant. But Elsa finds the conditions nigh unbearable.

She has to wear a GPS fitness tracker that tells her boss, colleagues and guests where she is at every instant. There are strict quotas in terms of how many beds she has tomake, how many bar fridges she has to restock, how many metres she has to cover and even how many calories she has to exert every fifteen minutes.

Yesterday her boss caught her humming a ditty while she worked.

Turn it up, it\’s your favorite song Dance, dance, dance to the distortion Turn it up, keep it on repeat
Stumbling around like a wasted zombie

He scorned Elsa for not focusing on work and docked her half a days wage.

Today she is having lunch with her sister Anna who works in the hotel restaurant, along with a few other service staff including YOU. Anna tells her sister and everyone that its time for them to organise and speak out against their oppressors. She wants to start a Facebook group in which Relaxation Hotel workers can share their experiences of exploitation.

Im not sure, Elsa says. Remember Moana Vinuatu. She tried to get us to join a union last year and was sacked. No-one has seen her since. I wonder if we should just make do. Things could get worse you know.

Anna turns to you and says, What do you think Skip? Surely we arent powerless? Surely theres a better way? Surely, theres hope?

You respond. Ummm…give me a week and Ill get back to you.

Little does she know that youre a visiting Australian university student who has an activist-researcher internship at the Everyday Politics Institute (EPI). You have embedded yourself into Anna and Elsas workplace to study their existing forms of everyday politics with a view to providing some advice for them and others like them.

That night you begin your final paper which you will present not only to your supervisor at the EPI, but also Elsa. Its entitled, The Politics of Everyday Life: Important Quotidian Hidden Stuff.
