Late papers accepted but graded down

(1) How does Magstadt define \”LCDs\”, \”development\” and \”development\” as an ideology? What are the \”myths and realities\” associated with development? What are its characteristics?

(2) What is Colonialism/Imperialism per the reading? What is neocolonialism? How does it influence development? (i.e., What legacy does colonialism leave behind in these countries?) Or to put it another way, what impact does this legacy (being a former colony) have on countries/former colonies that received their independence in the 19th and 20th centuries? What are the challenges that this legacy poses to political and economic development? (The answer to either question can be your thesis!). Make sure to refer to Chapter 9 (and any others, such as Chapter 18) in Magstadt.

(3) Discuss the impact of colonialism, imperialism and neocolonialism on former colonies per the films/stories. How is its legacy demonstrated in the films/interviews/lecture? Is the impact political, cultural or socioeconomic (or is it all three)?

Are the countries discussed in the films really independent or are they in a state of dependency/neocolonialism? (i.e. are they still relying on more developed countries to survive? Can they make political and economic decisions on their own? Are they really \”sovereign states\”?).

(4) What can you conclude about the legacy of colonialism and the challenges of development in developing countries? What happens when development fails? Do we see failed states? What should be done to help countries develop? What does the Rosling lectures tell us about development? (This should be your conclusion where you restate your thesis). What have you learned about development after reading the chapters and watching the films?

Learning Activity (Branches of Government)

Branches of Government

As you continue to build on your final paper, it is recommended that you review the Learning Activity assignments and review the Final Paper prompt before beginning this assignment. Please be sure to review the feedback provided by your instructor on your Week One and Week Two Learning Activities as well. A model POL201 Final Paper Guide is provided for you to download and utilize when completing your Final Paper. The three branches of our government each play crucial roles in the U.S. national government. Each branch has specific power, duties, and responsibilities that are the most apparent features of our system of separate powers. Nevertheless, each branch has been critiqued for having definite strengths and weaknesses that become obvious in certain situations. Analyzing these strengths and weaknesses will enable you to evaluate and recommend ways to enhance and correct these fundamental assets and deficiencies of the branches of our national government.

Develop several detailed paragraphs regarding your third main point using the Week Three Learning Activity Worksheet.

Branches of Government
Select one of the three branches of government (executive, legislative, or judicial). Focusing on the one branch of government you have selected, develop four paragraphs that explain one strength and one weakness of the branch of government, as well as options to maintain the strength and correct the weakness of the branch you have selected.

While your textbook can be utilized as a source, it does not count towards your two sources for this assignment. Two new sources should be utilized each week to meet the minimum of eight required sources for the final.

Be sure that the sources you are utilizing to support your ideas are valid, reliable, and not overly bias.

To analyze and compare 3 readings

Assignment format: Critical Reading Memos: Two pages, typed, 12 point font, Times New Roman, 1-inch margins, double spaced.
Description of the assignment: Critical Memos are response papers that engage at least 3 readings of your choice covered since the last response paper. In only one paragraph, summarize the key points of the authors you are discussing. That does not mean you need to include all of their key points. For each author you engage, you need to discuss at least one major idea from their work. The rest of the memo is your analysis. You will draw on different authors ideas and bring them together. This is a good way to develop ideas you are interested in for your research paper, the big assignment for this course. You will take some of the key ideas from the readings you select to discuss/analyze/critique, and then you will extend/apply those ideas. You can focus on what the readings have in common, how they are different, draw on your experience, reconsider the readings within a broader or different context of issues, connect it with a current event, bring in other readings not from this class, etc. There are many options to writing a good critical memo. Your goal is to show me that you are thinking sociologically and critically about the readings.
