Explain What is the author\’s overall point or argument?

Please review one chapter (any chapter) of On Course and then write a summary (directions below).

A six-step process for writing summaries, revised.

(adapted from Lawrence Behrens and Leonard Rosen, Writing and Reading Across the Curriculum, Boston: Little, Brown, 1982.)

1. Read the essay carefully several times.

2. Reread. This time, divide the essay into sections or stages of thought (look for transitions and the development of new ideas/arguments, or a shift in point of view). Label each section or stage of thought. Underline key ideas and terms.

3. Write down the main point of each section. When the writer is arguing persuasively, summarize the writer\’s conclusion. When the writer is engaged in mostly description, indicate the subject of the description and what point the writer is trying to make by using this description.

4. Write a thesis sentence for the whole essay: What is the author\’s overall point or argument? It must be in sentence/argument form: The writer argues that…

5. Write the first draft of your summary by combining the thesis sentence with the section-by-section summaries. You should add details to fill out our understanding of the author\’s arguments, and to make connections between ideas. Eliminate repetitive sentences. Read your summary aloud, listening for awkwardness, and/or places where you need to expand.

6. Revise the summary, inserting transitional words and phrases where necessary to ensure coherence. Transitional words indicate to your reader that you know where your essay is going. Do you? Stop and ask yourself, \”what am I trying to say here?\” Check for choppy sentences, grammar errors, spelling, and punctuation. All use of the author\’s words must be in quotation marks, with the page number following in parentheses.
