Clash of Civilizations
For the Unit 9 Assignment, you will compose a 500 word essay comparing Huntingtons Clash of Civilizations? article with one other political scientist and/or academic who has written a response to Huntingtons Clash of Civilizations? article.
Within the introduction to Harvard Professor Samuel P. Huntingtons 1993, seminal political science article, The Clash of Civilizations?, the author noted,
World politics is entering a new phase and intellectuals have not hesitated to proliferate visions of what it will be, the end of history, the return of traditional rivalries between nation states, and the decline of the nation state from the conflicting pulls of tribalism and globalism, among others. Each of these visions catches aspects of the emerging reality. Yet they all miss a crucial, indeed a central, aspect of what global politics is likely to be in the coming years.
It is my hypothesis that the fundamental source of conflict in this new world will not be primarily ideological or primarily economic. The great divisions among humankind and the dominating source of conflict will be cultural. Nation states will remain the most powerful actors in world affairs, but the principal conflicts of global politics will occur between nations and groups of different civilizations. The clash of civilizations will dominate global politics. The fault lines between civilizations will be the battle lines of the future. (Huntington, 1993)
Huntingtons full article can be found here. Since Huntingtons article was published in 1993 many political scientists and/or academic have written in response to Huntingtons thesis – either agreeing or disagreeing with the Harvard professors ideas.
However, since the September 11, 2001 attacks on U.S. soil, Huntingtons thesis has renewed academic discourse.

Based on your understanding of the book Making Good, the documentary The Road from Crime and readings write an essay that addresses the following question:
Can criminals change?
If so, what do they need to help them integrate into society and become productive members of our society?
Why is it that such a large proportion of former offenders stay entangled in the criminal justice system?

Your reflections may be in the form of a comment on points you make when answering the question but will not be the main focus of your writing.
