claims made by companies/governments/organizations

This project will pull together the information we cover in this class; it will count as 120 points (12%) of your overall grade. There are several parts of this project; some parts can be completed very quickly, others will take more time. Be sure you have completely read through the instructions before you begin collecting data. At the end this document is the grading rubric.

Have you ever wondered if the claims made by companies/governments/organizations are true? For this project, you will be given a chance to test these claims.

There will undoubtedly be many questions that arise as you go through this project. Part of that is by designI want to you experience many of the intricacies of designing and conducting an observational study, including data collection and analysis. Its all a positive thingand, more importantly, realistic in the life of a statistician. In your final write-up for the project, be sure to clearly state any assumptions you had to or chose to make.
*NOTE: Throughout this project, write as if you are communicating to a general audience!!! Do NOT assume that what you are writing will be read by a bunch of statisticians. For example, write a report that your grandmother could understand.
TO GET STARTED: Choose a claim from a reputable source. You need to submit this claim to your instructor for approval before you begin the rest of the project!
Example Claim: The National Association of College and Employers claims the average salary
Offered to 2010 graduates is $48,351.

PART I
Collect the data from 100 people to test your chosen claim. For example, if you were using the claim from above, then you would get at least 100 people who graduated from college in 2010 to tell you their average salary upon graduation. Collect your data in any way you wish, via email, Survey Monkey, Facebook, etc.
Last revised fall 2016
Present your data (the 100 individual responses) in table form, similar to the example provided in Canvas. To produce your tables and any graphs, you should use Excel, StatCrunch in MyStatLab or other statistical resources.

PART II
Answer the following questions about your data. NOTE: TYPE YOUR ANSWERS IN COMPLETE SENTENCES!
1. What sampling technique did you use to collect the data? How do you know? 2. Describe any bias in the samples. [Answers to this question will vary in length] 3. Is the data qualitative or quantitative? If qualitative, is it nominal or ordinal? If quantitative, is it continuous or discrete?
4. Is this data from a population (therefore a parameter)?
Is this data from a sample (therefore a statistic)? 5. Is the study more likely descriptive or inferential statistics? Why?

PART III
Construct a frequency distribution using 5 8 classes. Create 2 different, appropriate pictorial representations of your data (ie, bar/column graph, pie
chart, etc).

PART IV
Compile a summary of statistics. If you havent already, put your data into Excel as you are going to be performing many data manipulations in future parts of the project. Treat your data just as you would one of the datasets from the homework. Be sure you include appropriate
measures of central tenancy and dispersion etc.

.Write a brief paragraph describing the meaning of the statistics you chose. For example, if some of the statistics chosen were the mean, median, and mode, then briefly discuss the differences among the samples and the combined total as well as the different measures of central tendency.
Last revised fall 2016
*You should have a minimum of 8 statistical values for each question!! More is fine as long as you can explain WHAT the statistic is measuring.

PART V
1. Construct a 95% Confidence Interval to estimate the population mean/proportion in the
claim.
2. What can you conclude from this result regarding the claim?

PART VII
Write a BRIEF (no more than 2, type-written pages) summary of your general conclusions about the data you have collected. Include your summary any conjectures about the claim. Also address whether you think it would be appropriate to make any conjectures about the entire state in which you live or even United States, etc. Be sure to address any potential pitfalls within your data things that might make your conclusions not as valid.
The summary should incorporate the charts/graphs/tables from Excel within your report.

Question 2

In this course, we are not able to discuss every communication technology. Notable absences are radio, newspapers, cinema, photography, and music, among many others. Choose one of these five forms of mediated communication and make the argument that it is an important part of the human experience. Where we would be if it did not exist? How has it changed over time? What will its future potentially be? Your answer should be approximately 500-700 words.

ETHICS IN TELEVISION ASSIGNMENT

Ethics in Television Assignment
For this assignment, you are required to find an episode of a television show or a film with an ethical dilemma.
Your first paragraph should contain the title of the show/film, introduce the character(s), explain the moral dilemma and include the theory that you are using (one theory). In addition, provide any necessary background information that I might need to know in the first paragraph. Background information should not exceed 150 words.
For this paper, you must demonstrate knowledge of two theories. You argue for one position. Then, you take a critics position and argue for another theory. Lastly, you explain why the criticism fails.
For example, you argue that Clark Kent is a utilitarian. Then, an opposing party might argue that he is a virtue ethicist, so you explain that position. Then, youll explain why the opposing party fails.
The following theories are acceptable: nihilism, ethical relativism (either ethical subjectivism or cultural relativism, but you cannot use both), utilitarianism, Kantianism, virtue ethics, and ethical egoism
I must have access to the television show or film. I have access to both Netflix and Amazon. A YouTube clip will also work, but please cite the film AND include the YouTube link. In addition, indicate where the dilemma in the film occurs. For example, at the bottom of the works cited page indicate that the dilemma occurs 45 mins (or however long) into the film. (This part is just for my reference, so it will not be in the MLA handbook)
Your assignment should be in MLA format, be 1200-1500 words, and include a works cited page. (Works cited page is not included in the word count) You must have a minimum of 4 sources including the film. You must use a minimum of 5 in-text citations and are required to use your textbook and/or D2L reading assignments as sources. Please double space and use 12-point font. (Note: You can use each chapter as a different source)
Your turnitin summary should not exceed 22%.
Peer Editing Day: You must bring two hardcopies of your rough draft. This is mandatory. 10 points will be deducted from your essay grade if you do not complete this task. At this point, you should have at least your introduction and first two body paragraphs completed.

Mooz text provides an algorithm for identifying types of decisions and provides a road map for matching decision models to the characteristics needed when using each model.

Chapter 6 of the Mooz text provides an algorithm for identifying types of decisions and provides a road map for matching decision models to the characteristics needed when using each model.

Pick a critical decision from your own life and one of the decision models in chapter 7 or 8 (e.g., Fact Based in chapter 7) and complete the road map suggested for that model. Completing the road map requires that you identify the name of the specific method that should be used, for example, Fact based=>Rank Sums Process. For the characteristics you need to identify both the type of characteristics (e.g. Criteria ranking sums) and the specifics (e.g. listing the criterion for each alternative and the resulting sums).

Aging & Systems in the Larger Environment Research Paper

For this scholarly paper, you will examine course material and research you conduct about age, development and systems, then compare and contrast that to the life of an actual older adult you interview. The interviewee will be someone aged 70 or older and is well enough cognitively and emotionally to participate. You will address how the interviewees experiences can be understood using a macro theory from course material and also how his or her experiences relate to developmental concepts associated with late adulthood. The interviewee may be a relative, a neighbor, a friend, a co-worker, co-workers parent, a member of the community. You can also choose to visit someone at a local senior center, retirement community, or assisted-living facility (not a nursing home).

Using reminiscence as a tool, examine the following:

What is daily life like for the person? Provide brief overview of an average day. Focus on developmental strengths and challenges.
What did the person discuss about their identity and what is meaningful for them?
How do these findings compare to normative patterns?
Using a macro systems lens, examine how changes in history, policy and/or social institutions played a role in and impacted the person\’s life course. Cover the following:
Central tenets of the theory or concepts
Strengths and limitation of the theory/concept
How the theory assists in understanding how the person has been impacted by the larger system of a change in history, policy and/or social institution
This is an academically focused, 6-8 page research paper (excludes title and reference pages). You must use a minimum of seven, scholarly, peer-reviewed sources. No more than two of which may be an internet source and two likely will be your text books for the course. You must have at least two high quality references and citations regarding normative developmental patterns, and at least two regarding your chosen macro theory.
