In \”Our Tired, Our Poor, Our Kids,\” by Anna Quindlen is informing people of the boom market of homelessness and that shelters are going to be the low-income housing of the future. Quindlen describes one situation where six people live together in a room the size of a master bedroom one woman, five children. Each day the young kids go to daycare, the others go to school, while their mother looks for an apartment when she isn\’t in her drug-treatment meetings.
The boom in homelessness is not the typical man on the streets, but are children in the hundreds and thousands. New York City provided shelter for just under a thousand families twenty years ago and know is trying to find room for 10,000 children a night. Quindlen states that \”Not since the Great Depression have this many babies, toddlers and kids had no place like home\”(330).
She also talks about three mothers that live in shelter housing called Casa Rita, which is located in the Bronx. They describe trying to find an apartment being really difficult because when the landlords find out that they have Emergency Assistance Rehousing Program they won\’t even consider them. They appreciate that they can get shelter but still want to move on. Quindlen describes that twenty years ago the solution to homelessness is affordable living and today that still is the idea. The result of high priced average two-bedroom apartments is that lower income careers like police officers and teachers can\’t afford to live where they work.
She talks about how the welfare reform is trying to use cutbacks and this is why some of the people end up on the streets. The average homeless women is younger than it has ever been and because of this type of childhood they may never finished high school and may never held a job.
