This is the first of two writing assessments that you will complete this semester. It will enable me to see your writing weaknesses and strengths so I can focus discussion and instruction on problem areas. The final assessment will mirror the format of this initial assessment so progress can be assessed at the end of this class.
Your essay should reflect professional communication standards including tone, grammar, punctuation, spelling and overall writing standards. It will be graded and results provided to you within a week of the due date.
You will have 80 minutes to complete this assessment. You should use the following writing process:
1. Take 5 minutes to look over the topic.
2. Take 20-25 minutes to write a well-organized 3-4 paragraph essay that includes a clearly stated thesis with logical, detailed support for your central idea. Organize and connect your supporting points.
3. Take 10-15 minutes to reread your essay. Revise and edit. Check your spelling, grammar, and punctuation to correct any mistakes.
