So, this is one of the hardest parts of the novel: who is the protagonist whose journey is going to carry your book to greatness? What does he/she/it want? What things stand in their way? Remember, there are external obstacles, but the most damaging of all obstacles are internal. Also remember that the protagonist is not necessarily the \”hero\” but is the one we\’re most concern with.

Antagonists are harder, sometimes, because you have to empathize with people or things you might not support. Take a moment and give a description of your antagonist here. What does he/she/it look like? What does he/she/it want? What\’re their wants and flaws and how are they all related to one another? Why is the antagonist opposing the protagonist? Put yourself in their shoes.

You\’ve got your protagonist, you\’ve got your antagonist, now all we need are the people to live in their orbit. Remember that they need to feel like they live independently of the protagonist. They have their own wants, needs, and flaws. Who are the people who are going to flesh out your world?

We\’ve discussed now the characters who need to populate your novel and you\’ve had a chance to play around with them a bit. Now, for this first major assignment, I want a report on them. I want to hear about your Protagonist, Your Antagonist, and the main Supporting Character. For each I\’d like a few sentences describing their role in the novel as well as their wants and needs and flaws and, especially, how they relate to one another.
