Discuss Paul Robeson and the Politics of Racism and Activism in the Arts in 1950s America

I am attaching my research proposal below. The term paper should be based on the pre-term paper.

It should consist of the following: a ten-page paper (2500 words) on an issue dealt with in the course, citing composers/performers and analyzing (in musical and/or social terms) particular pieces of music that are relevant. It will be worth 30% of your grade. The paper should contain a bibliography and either footnotes, endnotes, or citations. The bibliography and notes should follow one of the approved forms: Modern Language Association or the Chicago Manual of Style. These are available in the reference section of the library and online, and will be available on Canvas later in the semester.

Organization

Having a specific focus will make the paper clearer and also assist you in your research. Starting out with a topic sentence will make your direction clear: its a good idea to formulate a question or questions you wish to investigate. It is not necessary to have a definite answer, even by the end of your work–as we have seen in our readings, frequently the answer is fairly complex.

Please avoid lengthy career summaries or paraphrases of information found in your sources. It is more important to use this information in discussion and evaluation than in rehashing biographical facts. Re: use of citations, the rule of thumb is that for factual information found in three or more sources, it is not necessary to include a citation. For more detailed information not found in every source, you need to include the citation. For opinions that are not yours, you need to document your source.

When in doubt about whether or not to cite a source, its better to cite the source than to commit plagiarism.

Quotations used for discussion or to support your argument are welcome, but they should not be used extensively. It is more important to express the ideas in your own words than to rely on lengthy quotes from other sources. Please check your bibliographical source book for details on when to single space and when to double space a quotation. If you want to include lyrics to songs please do not place them in the body of the paper (they will not count toward the papers length); include them in an appendix at the back of the paper.

Details

The paper must be typed and double-spaced; be sure to put your last name first, then your first name. All titles of books, newspapers, magazines, journals should be either italicized, printed in bold or underlined. Re: musical works, the rule of thumb is to use the above method for works that contain several movements or are complete in themselves, with the exception of songs, which are normally put within quotation marks. Movement names may be described by their titles, using a capital letter at the beginning; quotation marks are not necessary.

When referring to a composer or performer, please use the persons full name for the first reference; you should use the last name or both names after the first reference; do not refer to the composer by first name only unless the person is part of a couple which has the same last name, i.e. Ike and Tina Turner. In the case of performers who use only one name or are known to the public by only one name (Beyonce, Nas, Aretha), it will be fine to use only that name.

All sources, including Internet sources, printed music and recordings, should be listed in the Bibliography. If you include interviews, please give details of whom you interviewed, who the person is in relation to the paper, and when they were interviewed. Please note that in the final paper your research using online materials is limited to not more than 60% of your paper.

You might want to consider including additional materials such as a CD or DVD, or an online link if it assists your discussion. Other additional materials might be photocopies of articles, photocopies of music, etc. These materials will not count toward your final page count, however; they are in addition to what you write.
