Eddie, age 9, was referred at the request of his school because of the difficulties that he creates in class. He has been suspended for a day twice this school year. His teacher complains that he is so restless that the rest of the class is unable to concentrate. He is hardly ever in his seat, but roams around the class, talking to other children while they are working. He never seems to know what he is going to do next.
His mother says that Eddie\’s behavior has been difficult since he was a toddler. He always required little sleep and was awake before anyone else. When he was small, he got into everything, particularly early in the morning before the others go up. When he was 4, he managed to unlock the door and wander off into a busy main street. He was rejected from a preschool program because of his difficulty behavior and he also had a difficult year in kindergarten.

At their wit\’s end, the parents of Jordan, a six year old boy, brought him in for an evaluation. Their already shaky marriage is being severely tested by conflict over their son\’s behavior at home and at school. The mother complained bitterly that the father frequently away from home on business, \”overindulged\” their son. The son would argue and throw temper tantrums and insist on continuing games, books, etc. whenever his father put him to bed, so that a 7:30 PM bedtime was delayed until 10:30, 11:00 or even 11:30 at night. Similarly, the father had been known to cook 4 or 5 different meals for his son\’s dinner if Jordan stubbornly insisted that he would not eat what had been prepared. At school, several teachers had complained that the child was stubborn and spiteful, often spoke out of turn and refused to comply with classroom rules

Communication

Multimedia Assignment 1 focuses on Chapter 1: Communicating and Leading at Work and the leadership of Howard Schultz, CEO of Starbucks. You should complete this assignment after you have read chapter 1 and completed the Chapter 1 study guide.
For this assignment, read the case study presented in the text box on page 2. Then watch the two videos posted, Howard Schultz On Connecting Employees to Vision and Howard Schultz on Leadership. I recommend taking notes while you watch the videos, focusing on how he discusses communication and the roles of leaders and leadership.
After completing the reading and watching the videos, provide a discussion based on the prompts below:
1.According to Schultz, todays leaders face new challenges and responsibilities. Discuss what Schultz views as challenges and responsibilities he and other leaders today face. Then, explain how Schultz views the role of communication in effective leadership as he faces these challenges and responsibilities.
2.How would you evaluate Schultzs leadership? In other words, in what ways do you agree or disagree with Schultzs discussion of leadership and the role communication plays as leaders face the challenges and responsibilities of today? As you move forward in this class, what would you like to learn that would enhance your communication and leadership skills?
