discuss What is Racism

What is Racism? #4: Reza Aslan and Muslim Thinkers
Certainly, with the controversy over Islam in the Western world, including Syrian refugees, ISIS and Muslim extremist terror attacks, it is important to get different perspectives on a very broad and varied population. Therefore, here is the material for the 4th What is Racism? assignment.

What is Racism?

The purpose of the What is Racism? assignments is to explore that very question. What is racism? What does it look like?

Material over one issue or incident will be provided for you. You may use additional material if and only if it is related to the specific incident or issue involved in the assignment (e.g. additional reports of the incident, etc.).

The text of the assignment should cover several aspects of the incident.

1. What is your initial reaction to the incident? Is it racism, prejudice, or discrimination?

2. Take the perspective of the victim. What might this person be thinking and/or feeling? From this perspective, would this be racism, prejudice or discrimination?

3. Take the perspective of the perpetrator. What might this person be thinking and/or feeling? From this perspective, would this be racism, prejudice or discrimination?

4. What is your final conclusion? Was this incident racism, prejudice or discrimination?

Requirements:

1. Your submission should be 1-2 pages, single-spaced in Calibri, 11 pt. font. This is the default font for the most recent Microsoft Word.

2. You should use APA style as your referencing system, especially if you use external sources. You do not need to include an abstract. If you need assistance with either of these styles, you may seek help at the Academic Support Center or online at http://owl.english.purdue.edu/.

discuss What do you think inspires someone to choose a life of religious devotion?

1. One of the themes of the novel is the relationship between sexual desire and religious ecstasy. Have the sisters sexualized their devotion to Jesus? How? Did you notice that some of the nuns fixated on the physical manifestation of Jesus? Did it affect their dispositions?

2. What do you think inspires someone to choose a life of religious devotion? Is it an escape? Are the reasons for selecting this course in life different for men than they are for women? How? Are they different for individuals of different religions?

3. Many of the sisters were jealous of Mariette. Why? Is it surprising that such a physically painful experience–stigmata–implies holiness? Do you think that the individuals that experience it are blessed or cursed?

4. How did you feel about Mariette? Do you believe that a person can be so consumed by religious ecstasy that they precipitate \”miracles\”? Do you believe in miracles?

5. Why do you think that Ron Hansen chose to end the novel the way in which he did? Was it realistic? Is it possible to return to a normal life after experiencing what Mariette experienced? Did her post-convent life seem \”normal\” or was she, in spirit, still devoted only to Jesus? Did it change how you felt about the authenticity of the event that unfolded in the convent?

Describe how each theory would explain the offenders behavior and actions.

Section 1: Description of the case based on Theodore Robert Bundy an American serial killer.

Research the background of the case, the offenders history leading up to the crime, and the outcome of the case. Give a clear brief recap of the case/crime(s) (no more than 1 page for this). Research on the background of the case should come from multiple sources.

Section 2: Use two Theories. Describe how each theory would explain the offenders behavior and actions. Begin by describing the main points and arguments that each theory proposes before applying the theory to the case study. Each theory should have its own subsection.
1st theory is Labeling theory, describe how the process of being labeled and/or going through the criminal justice system affected the offenders perceptions about themselves and their future behavior. If using the biosocial perspective, explain how genetics (having a criminal family background) and environment (child abuse, poverty) interact to explain behavior.
2nd Theory: General Strain Theory

Section 3: Personal Opinion

Describe the strengths and weakness of each theory. How well does each theory explain the criminal behavior?

Based on your analysis, discuss which theory you found more convincing and why. I am looking for a thoughtful, critical discussion.
