describe a trip to the WSU Museum of Art or other museum, and examine 4 works currently being displayed and write about those 4 pieces.

Writing Assignment

For the writing assignment you will make a trip to the WSU Museum of Art or other museum, and examine 4 works currently being displayed and write about those 4 pieces. This could be a painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, photographer or several different artist and media depending on the show.

Requirements:

I want to know how you feel about each of the four pieces – what do you like/dislike, what do you think the artist was trying to convey, etc. How do you think they compare against each other and similar work you may be familiar with. Incorporate elements and ideas we have talked about in class and read in the textbook. BE CREATIVE – dont just regurgitate information.

I am more concerned with content and your thoughts on the works than the technical aspects of the paper. However if the spelling and grammar is extremely poor it could affect your grade.

Paper must be 3-5 pages long, double spaced (the bibliography does NOT count as a page)

2 physical sources (digital copies are fine but they must be in print physically as well). Look for sources on your artist(s), the medium they work it like: sculpture, painting, printmaking, etc. Go to the library or the library website: libraries.wsu.edu. This isnt a research paper I just want to see 4 citations so I know you read something.

2 legitimate online sources. Your best sources will be .gov, .edu, .org. Also look at YouTube, the artists\’ websites, etc.

Wikipedia is NOT a valid source

* 10 pts will be deducted if Wikipedia is used as a source.

Footnotes should be used to cite all sources. Use Purdue Owl (Chicago Style) to help you for your citations and bibliography. The main thing I am looking for is that you use footnotes.

This is what a footnote looks like in the text: source1 (more or less) If you insert the footnote using Microsoft Word it will enter the footnote at the bottom of the page like this:

_______________________
1 Type your source in here. Title/website and author.

Paper must include a bibliography: list all sources – title of source, author at minimum (does NOT have to be annotated)

All papers will be turned in electronically via Blackboard.

Follow the directions in this rubric. Not following them will be the main reason you are marked down on points.

– 10% will be deducted for each DAY, not class period it is late.

Scoring:

Choose 4 works and discuss them: 20 pts

Grammar and spelling 10 pts

Paper length/formatting 10 pts

Sources (2 print, 2 web) 20 pts

Footnotes 20 pts

Bibliography 20 pts

Total: 100 pts

Write an Argumentative response (for or against) to the following: Pets: A True Waste of Money When Millions Starve by Jon Swift

The purpose of the Final Essay Exam during the last class is for you to have an opportunity to pick up your last essay on the day of the official Exam. . .thus, your essay is a final teaching tool, rather than just a grade while your paper vanishes into a black hole.

Write an Argumentative response (for or against) to the following:
Pets: A True Waste of Money When Millions Starve
by Jon Swift
In a new book, Time to Eat the Dog? The Real Guide to Sustainable Living, authors Robert and Brenda Vale argue that resources required to feed a dog — including the amount of land needed to feed the animals that go into its food — give it about twice the eco-footprint of fueling a gas-guzzling Toyota Land Cruiser. Noting that a cat\’s paw print was roughly equivalent to a Volkswagen Golf\’s, the magazine New Scientist asked an environmentalist at the Stockholm Environment Institute in York, U.K., to independently calculate animals\’ environmental impact. He reported that \”his figures tallied almost exactly\” with the Vales.
According to Children International, approximately 18,000 children die every day in the world from starvation and its related diseases all needless deaths. Even in the United States, one of the richest countries on earth, millions of people go to bed (if they have one) hungry. While at the same time, millions of animals live in warm, cozy homes getting fat. What has happened to our country? We allow millions of people to go hungry, but feed millions of animals?
Thankfully, this is changing. Since the year 2000 we have seen the demand for pets plummet to levels not seen since World War II, says Tacoma, Washingtons city animal director. Right now, people are choosing between their pets and their children. Even now, we still choose our own children over pets.
Animal lovers need not be shocked. While the number of pets left to die in animal shelters has risen dramatically– four million cats and dogsabout one every eight secondsare put down in U.S. shelters each year, it is still a relatively small percentage of the total pet population. Americans own 78 million dogs and 86 million cats.
It is impossible to determine how many stray dogs and cats live in the United States; estimates for cats alone range up to 70 million. The average number of litters a fertile cat produces is one to two a year; the average number of kittens is four to six per litter, or between 8 and 12 kittens a year. Not all have happy homes awaiting them. The average number of litters a fertile dog produces is one a year; the average number of puppies is four to six.
Proposals have been floated in some communities to license every pet, increase licensing fees and limit owners to no more than one dog and one cat. Fining violators would reduce over-population of pets and the millions of unwanted animals euthanized every year — which costs millions of dollars to taxpayers.
My children have been begging for a puppy for years, says Michelle Lee-Thomas, a mother of three. I would like to get a dog, but I am afraid of the costs. Dog food has gone up ten-fold, and doggie insurance too. Yes, they have pet health insurance! I cannot even afford health insurance for my kids.
While the average cost of owning a dog or cat can be as low as several hundred dollars a year for necessary shots and food, unwanted pets are more likely to be diseased and spread disease.
According to researchers at the Tacoma University Department of Animal Security, Americans no longer have the money to pay for such luxury goods as our furry friends. As a nation, we have our priorities completely backwards. If you took the money we all spend on pets, we could provide health insurance for the entire country.
According to the American Pet Products Associate, we spend over 50 billion dollars a year on pets, while spending only 14 billion dollars on school breakfast and lunch programs which try to meet needs for a growing population of students below the poverty level.
And now as Congress begins to implement expensive health care legislation, Tacoma U. has come up with a solution. Dr. Politha Urugai laughs. We need puppy death panels to reduce the millions of unwanted pets and public costs associated with warehousing and destroying abandoned animals.

Using evidence and the stimulus above, evaluate how depth perception and one other perceptual principle plays a role in organising stimuli into meaningful patterns.

Stimulus 1:
One of our most remarkable perceptual abilities is our capacity to create the appearance of three dimensions from flat retinal images. Without depth perception you would be unable to drive a car, ride a bike, catch a ball, thread a needle or simply walk around a room. The world would look like a flat surface.
(Van Iersel et al. Psychology VCE units 3&4. Southbank, Victoria: Nelson Australia Pty Ltd.)
(Depth Perception)

Stimulus 2:
Perception is full of interesting puzzles, such as how cars, people and pets can constantly change their shape as they move about. Yet we perceive them as remaining the same size and shape. For example, a car does not grow smaller as it speeds away even though its shape and size on your retina grows smaller and smaller. A door does not become a trapezoid as you walk through it, even though that is what happens to its shape on your retina. These are examples of how perceptions remain constant.
(Plotnik, R Introduction to Psychology [7th ed] Belmont, CA: Wadsworth Thomson Learning)
(Constancy)

Referring to the above stimuli and other relevant information explain the following concepts on how individuals make sense of the world
Perceptual Principles
Depth/Distance Cues
Perceptual Set
