Incorporate a total of three articles, PLUS the short story of your choosing into your analysis of a specific aspect of the story \”A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings\” (Marquez)

What you will write about . . . .

In this final essay you will incorporate a total of three articles, PLUS the short story of your choosing into your analysis of a specific aspect of the story. Your research should include Peer Reviewed Scholarly Articles ONLY and will provide you with a lens through which you can interpret some specific aspect of the story chosen. It is essential that the articles add to your interpretation and you must incorporate ideas from all three articles into the paper.

Please choose ONE of the following short stories as the main focus of your paper; see the Choosing a Topic Handout for more details:

A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings (Marquez)
Vampires in the Lemon Grove (Russell)
The Things They Carried (OBrien)

Please be sure to single out only ONE facet of the story and analyze it throughout the story–do not retell the story. Instead, follow the thread of a single idea throughout the story in your interpretation; note that you do not need to tell the reader about everything that happens in the story, but you do need to evaluate your topic throughout the whole story. Be sure to show the reader by using specific examplesdont tell about it. For example, you might compare common historical depictions of Angels with those given in Marquezs story and then interpret events in the story in relationship with this departure from the traditional view.

here are the short stories along with suggested areas for your initial research:

Use your sociological imagination to create an alternate biography for yourself. C. Sociology Paper Assignment

Please make careful note of the instructions. Points will be deducted if you do not follow the instructions exactly, so follow the format as closely as possible.
The paper is due on the last day of class before the final. Papers will be accepted up to the day of the final, but with a significant penalty assessed, so try to get your work in on time. The paper should be at least three pages in length, although you might need more space to do a really good job. The paper should also be double spaced printed, and have a cover sheet with your name, the day and class time, and the title of the paper. Font size should be 12-14 pts. The cover sheet does not count towards the page requirement. If you use any outside sources they should be referenced on a works cited page. This also does not count towards the length requirement. The paper should be stapled or paper clipped. There should be no binders or any other type of folder. Keep it simple.
In the paper you will use your sociological imagination to create an alternate biography for yourself. C. Wright Mills defined sociological imagination as \”the vivid awareness of the relationship between personal experience and the wider society\”. Having a vivid sociological imagination means understanding that much of our experience is shaped by sociological forces beyond our control. Time and place of our birth, our birth date and birth year, gender, ethnicity, nationality, the type of family we are born into, social class, birth order, cultural inheritances, family inheritances, and the timing of our own personal biography with much larger historical processes all help determine the outcomes we experience later in life and whether we succeed or fail. In this assignment you will imagine that you control these factors and create an alternate biography for yourself in which you get to choose the time and place you are born, your gender, ethnicity, etc. You will also explain why you made the choices you made, exercising your sociological imagination to illustrate how our environment and birth circumstances shape our destiny. Include as much detail as you can imagine and use the paper to demonstrate that you understand the effects that sociological forces have on our lives. Try to have fun with the assignment. Good luck!

Explain How does tradition change over time?

Your first essay assignment is to use the topic of tradition and relate it to The Lottery. As you consider
this topic, know there are many different approaches you might want to take in developing your thesis.
Here are some things to think about as you decide:

1.
What could be said about our own society and tradition as it relates to the story?
2.
Does everybody in the story feel the same about tradition?
3.
How does tradition shape human behavior?
4.
What is the value of traditions?
5.
How can traditions be harmful?
6.
How does tradition change over time?
7.
What are the beliefs that support the traditions?
8.
What happens to those who defy tradition?
9.
What can we learn from examining the role of traditions in the story?

You might also find helpful the discussion posts and comments from your classmates in developing a
thesis for your essay.

Once you have formulated your thesis statement, you will need to come up with three main points that
support your thesis. You will support these points with textual evidence from The Lottery. The textual
evidence is the WHY in what you think. For example, I can infer the Watson father was last years
winner because on page 265, Jack Watson is now drawing as the head of household.

Literature: An Introduction to Fiction, Poetry, Drama, and Writing, 12th Edition ISBN-13: 978-0205230389

For each of your three supporting points, you will need two pieces of textual evidence.

Using The Lottery as your source material, write an essay in the five-paragraph format which treats the topic of tradition.
The essay must:
Be modeled after the example given in A Guide to Writing the Literary Analysis Essay
Use MLA format
Correctly cite your source material in the body of the essay
Include a Works Cited page

Explain deontological ethics theory and explain it as clearly as you can (highlight its key aspects)

From the scenario students must develop an ethical case study. The scenario focuses on an event or an issue which the student considers raises significant ethical concerns about what is right or good, creates an ethical dilemma or constitutes an ethically problematic situation for those involved. The scenario addresses a variety of ethical concerns including professional, social, political or personal concerns.

TASK (you should structure the case study in the following way):

1) explain deontological ethics theory and explain it as clearly as you can (highlight its key aspects)

2) Apply deontological ethical theory to the following scenario and explain how the theory provides a basis for rational decision making. You should apply parts of the theory specifically to the scenario. For example specific maxims and imperatives in Deontology and explain how these help you to solve some of the ethical challenges that arise.

3) What are 1 or 2 major strengths and weaknesses of the theory (you should discuss at least one strength and one weakness, and you should draw on research and authoritative academic sources, not mere opinions, here)

4) Explain (briefly) whether or not the chosen ethical theory will help you resolve ethical dilemmas in the future in your own life or in the professional sphere, and why.

The case study is:

A major new study reveals that the cost of cancer drugs is unjustifiable. These drugs are important in saving lives and the study argues that such drugs must be made affordable to the patients who need them. The authors reveal that some families have gone bankrupt because of the extremely high costs of these drugs. Health experts argue that immunotherapy and work on identifying cancer genomes are not very helpful if patients cannot afford the cost of treatment.

Some pharmaceutical companies respond by arguing that clinical trials are very expensive and may require many thousands of patients. The authors of the study argue that trials can now be conducted with smaller numbers of patients (for example, they point out that a drug used for lung cancer required only 300 or so patients in the clinical trial; they point out also that other drugs can be tested on only 50 or 60 patients. The authors call on researchers to assume more control.

You are studying medicine or nursing and you have a well-developed understanding of ethics and applied ethics. What do you think ought to be done in this situation, and why?
