Sometimes people find themselves having to do something they believe is wrong. The results are seldom good and can be devastating. Such a situation occurs in the short story, \”Guests of the Nation\” by Frank O\’Connor, and in the autobiographical narrative, \”Shooting an Elephant\” by George Orwell. Analyze the motives for killing in the two pieces of literature; consider what the immediate results are and, based on your analysis of the literature, what the long-term consequences might be.
Consider whether a person has choices about such situations. Compose your thesis based on your judgement of the literature and on whatever such experiences you have had. Organize your essay in the way that allows you to best present your ideas about the literature and about the questions that are raised in each narrative.
Use your analysis of the two pieces of literature to support your discussion. Properly document quoted passages or ideas taken from the literature. Use MLA format and documentation style.
Compose a clear thesis. Be sure your essay is logically organized to develop and support your thesis and that it is carefully edited. Avoid merely retelling what is in the literature.
Case Study:
As the evening charge nurse in a skilled nursing facility and are the only RN on this shift. The other staff consists of nursing assistants and licensed practical nurses. The director of nursing recently conducted a supply audit and found numerous supplies are unaccounted for. The director of nursing asks for the help of all the charge nurses on all three shifts to help find out if someone is pilfering supplies and if so to take steps to correct this problem.
You are aware that the staff occasionally leaves at the end of the shift with forgotten supplies in their pockets. You realize that it could be easy to unintentionally take home rolls of adhesive tape, syringes, and lotion. However, your supervisor maintains that there has been an unprecedented increase in the amount of supplies that have not been charged to patients. You know that the skilled nursing facility operates on a very small margin of profit and cannot afford to absorb these costs.
When you asked some of the staff on the evening shift for an explanation, they reveal that a few employees have openly expressed that taking a few small supplies is, in effect, an expected and a minor fringe benefit of employment. They do not believe that the problem is widespread, and they cannot objectively document which employees are involved in pilfering supplies.
Assignment:
You must determine what action you should take as the nurse manager on the unit. Analyze your actions in terms of the desirable and undesirable effects on the employees involved in taking the supplies and those who are not.
Use the article Don\’t Waste Green! Launching a Budget Awareness Campaign (please see attached file) as well as power point presentation, also in attached files, to assist you in answering the questions in the case study.
For the research project, your goal is to go beyond a simple policy claim and compose a work that attempts to answer a question broader in scope than solving a policy problem. For example, rather than attempting to persuade readers that a law should be enacted to prevent automobile drivers from using cell phones while operating their vehicles, you might research why so many in our society seem unable to disconnect from their phones, or why many seem to prefer communicating through technology rather than engage in face-to-face interaction. The claim for your essay should be argumentative in nature and directly address your research question/issue in a clear thesis statement that is then supported with research throughout. In addition, your supporting texts should come from a variety of disciplines. A minimum of five to eight scholarly sources should be used in this assignment. Sources should come from the librarys databases.
