Assigned Journal Article Review Guidelines
(SOCI 223 – The Sociology of Sport)

You have been assigned the responsibility to compose a review of a scholarly article published in the sport sociology area. The following guidelines are intended to assist your effort. The purpose of this writing exercise is for you to comprehend information presented to you through scholarly articles and then to think critically about that content, hopefully connecting ideas to the Coakley (2015) text.

Sociologists, like all social scientists, create knowledge through research and publish their results. You have been provided with a list of research articles on our Moodle course site for this assignment. If youve not already done so, please select an article with a title interesting to you. Do not recoil from what may appear to be a long article. The fact is that empirical research articles are often 20 or so pages in length (but margins do tend to be rather wide). After selecting an article of interest, please read it, taking notes on what the researcher(s) studied, in what manner, among whom, what was found, and so forth.

After having read the article, you are ready to compose your review. Following are some general guidelines to assist you.
1. Write the citation of the article in APA format at the top of your paper.
Example:
Smith, G.H. and Moore, M. (2015). Individualism in Sport. North
American Sport Sociology Journal, 23(1), 38-57.
2. Write an introduction paragraph informing the reader that you intend to review an article. Tell the reader the reason you selected the article you did and what you hope to accomplish in your review. The purpose of this introduction paragraph is to prepare the reader for what will follow in your review.
3. Your following paragraphs should cover the following points:
a. What is the overall purpose or theme of the article?
b. What new ideas or information were communicated or conveyed by the article?
c. What research method did the author(s) use?
d. Who (or in some cases, what) did the researcher(s) observe?
e. What are the main/major findings of the article?
f. What do you think is the usefulness or the importance of the article?
g. What do you see as being the articles strengths and its limitations?
4. Write a conclusion paragraph that briefly informs the reader what you wrote about in your review and your overall findings. A conclusion paragraph provides intellectual closure for the reader. Don\’t leave it out. There is some redundancy in a conclusion paragraph, but it still is essential to provide closure in a skillfully written review.
