LEARNING ACTIVITY 1 INSTRUCTIONS
Background to the assignment: Who owns the past? Who has the right to define what the past means for us today? This assignment asks you to reflect on these questions. In the course of this assignment, you will discover that ancient history can sometimes be very contemporary, reminding us that the past is always present with us. Many of the conflicts in our world today have ancient roots, which is one of the reasons studying the past is important.
Description of the assignment: Go online and find some information about the Elgin Marbles (also called the Parthenon Marbles). Read a little about the controversy between the British and Greek governments concerning the ownership of these marbles. In a 2-paragraph essay, first summarize the controversy in your own words, and then take a clear position by supporting either the Greek or British side. Discuss 2 main reasons that support your position. You do not need to do extensive research or reading to complete this assignment well. However, if you include sources, cite them in current APA format. This assignment must be 250300 words and must include the word count in parentheses. Submit a draft of your Learning Activity to SafeAssign for feedback a few days before the assignment is due.
An annotated bibliography is a list of research sources (the bibliography) with comments about
the sources (the annotations).
This assignment requires you to identify the sources you plan to use for your research paper
(Assignment 2c), and explain why these sources are valuable to your project.
1) Read the articles listed for Assignment 2c.
2) Choose one of these articles to write about. Do not summarize your article for this
assignment.
3) Formulate a research question inspired by your chosen article ask yourself what issue
or problem you want to explore.
4) Do research using the librarys online academic databases. Acceptable research sources
include academic journal articles, and e-books and print books from academic presses.
5) Revise your research question and do more research as necessary. This research question
will appear at the beginning of your annotated bibliography.
6) Once you have a good idea of the argument you want to make in your essay, select the
three sources that will be most useful to you in making this argument.
7) Provide your research question at the beginning of your assignment, after the title, but
before your first source. Then, using APA format, list the three research sources in
alphabetical order and, in a short paragraph after each entry, write a concise summary of
each source followed by a short (one or two sentences) explanation of how this source
will contribute to your argument.
The summary of each source must include:
– The authors thesis or central claim
– Key points made by the author to support that claim
– The value of the source to the essay you plan to write: How do you intend to use the
source, and why? How do the conclusions or evidence in the source relate to your
own conclusions?
Note:
All of your sources must be peer-reviewed. Websites are generally discouraged for academic
research.
This assignment (excluding the title page) must not exceed 500 words.
Recommended length: 700 words (please dont go over 800 words)
For this class, I would like to you analyze the mise-en-scene in one scene from a Korean film. Before writing this paper, please read the excerpt from A Short Guide to Writing About Film (in the course reader), and review the slides on mise-en-scene in the class notes file which we covered in class.
Watch the entire film to get a sense of its style and themes.
Then, choose one scene to write about, watch it several times, and choose 2-4 elements of the mise-en-scene to focus on:
* setting
* costumes / make-up
* lighting/shadow
* props
* color
* human figures
* casting of actors/ acting/ behavior of characters
* movement on the screen (but not camera movement)
* composition/ arrangement of the image
Do not write about cinematography or sound.
I recommend first describing the scene you chose, and explaining why it is an important or interesting scene. Then, describe three elements of the mise-en-scene and explain how they contribute to the mood, emotions, or meaning of the scene.
*watch film and read review, linked below:
Rainy Days (1979) classic family drama set during Korean War
. Minnesota: a History (second text): *Provide a comprehensive book report, doubled-spaced and approximately four (4) pages in length. You are to use page numbers for reference at the end of your sentence when necessary, for example, I agree with the statement that politics played a dominant role in the mining decision. (261). Since I am using the author\’s premise (politics played a dominant role in mining) I must show where I got that premise (hence the page number 261) and since we are relying exclusively on the text assigned we can use just the page reference (short cite) and not have to list the author or book–it is just as reliable and much easier. If you are using the exact words of the author you must employ the use of quotes and, again, the page reference. How much depth and analysis you may contribute to your report is entirely up to you, however I will provide you with one clue–focus on the information concerning the people, the environment, and politics. For example, Chapter 9 deals extensively with a diverse economy–\”Although taconite revived the range economy, it was a mixed blessing.\” (261) Explaining why taconite mining was a mixed blessing involves the discussion of people, the environment, and politics. Students are free to write as they please, whether by following the chronological order set by the author or by topic priority for example–you are in control of the paper. Whatever style is selected, I am looking for depth and understanding of the assigned work and chapter coverage as well. Your work must read well (flow). I expect that no two papers will look alike–but all papers will read well and will be entertaining. Total points for this text and book report is 200 points. Grading is determined by the same method explained above–straight percentage grading. This assignment is due during the last week of your semester –however you will be able to submit your completed report any time before that date. I will provide feedback for your major book review once submittedbut time is limited during the last week of class.
Students can submit their work into the the assignment dropbox labeled \”Minnesota Book Report\” any time up to the deadline. This report is worth 200 Points.
