The essay should be in the style of a letter to the editor of the Wall Street Journal. Write your letter as if you were submitting it to the Wall Street Journal and emulate the better letters you have recently read. The WSJ guideline is

Your letter also should address an economic issue of current interest to WSJ readers. There is no restriction on what you write about as long as it is an economic issue and has already been discussed in the Wall Street Journal. It is important to keep up with current events so you will have a wide range of possible topics that you can address.

Letters to the editor are a form of critical analysis.

The letter should take and provide support for a position on an economic topic discussed in an article published in the Wall Street Journal during the two week period preceding the due date shown below. The letter can be in response to another letter, an opinion piece or some current event issue.

ARGUMENTATIVE SPEECH GUIDELINES
This is an advocacy, and thus persuasion, speech, meaning you MUST take a position.
Formulate a purpose statement that is a proposition of FACT, Value, or POLICY (as defined in the text and in the Toulmin Argument Structure) and present 2 main points, which is to say, two major claims to support your position on your topic.
Develop solid arguments to support your position. That is, PROVE the truth of your claims with sub claims and grounds. Remember, too, that you take a position after reading the research.

You must cite at least 5 credible sources in the speech. Credible/Reputable sources include books, articles, newspapers (e.g. New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post), academic journals (i.e. peer-reviewed journals), government websites (e.g. CDC or NIH), experts, library databases, etc. You CANNOT simply Google your research, although you can use Google Scholar.

Medieval Africa and its \”Taurists\”
Please be very simple and make sure that all questions are addressed, because it can cost you some serious points.
Reflect on the reading entitled \”Travel Writing, pre-colonial Africa,\” which provides excerpts from travelogues kept by foreign visitors to Africa during the medieval period. The reading can be found in the Week 1 folder. Answer the following questions and make sure you follow the specific instructions in each question.
1.Select two quotes, one from Battuta and one from Malfante, that you believe offers a positive portrayal of Africans. Share each quote, then after each quote, write 2-3 sentences about why you think those quotes reflect a positive description of Africans. (4 points)

3. Battuta was from North Africa (Morocco) and was born into a wealthy, elite family. He was well-educated and a devout Muslim and after studying law, he set out to explore the world and spent many years in sub-Saharan Africa. Find and share one quote that shows how his Muslim identity affected his thoughts on the Africans he met. After sharing the quote, reflect on how his religious background created a bias in the way he thought about Africans. Do you think he showed preference to the Muslim African communities he visited? Do you think we need to be aware of his bias to more critically understand his travel writing about Africans? Explain your answer. (4 points)
4. We have very few written documents about Africa before 1500, so the writings of Battuta and Malfante are important sources for us to use to learn more about African culture, politics, religion, and economics. Based on what you read, do you think what these men wrote is helpful in teaching us about medieval Africa, or is it too biased since neither man is from sub-Saharan Africa? What value, if any, do you find in these sources? Explain your answer. (3 points)

Is realistic training needed for emergency response/management personnel in light of the fact that disasters like the one depicted are rare?
Can we, in fact, mitigate loss by having systematic processes in place for responders?
Is it possible to train responders to a standard methodology to allow for cross-functional understanding and interoperability?
Is there a cost benefit (bang for the buck) in having a government-sponsored emergency management/coordination body?

Thinking about those questions, comment on federal control vs. local direction. Do we have a system in place now that is functional or does it need work? Do the appropriate CFR sections/parts reviewed during this course support your position? If you were the guru of ARFF, what would you do to improve the process?
