4. Questions and Source materials

Please answer the following 3 questions in a constructed paper of approximately 9 pages (3 pages for each question). All supporting source materials should be based on class materials (those are included in textbooks, readings from Blackboard, and lectures). No external source materials are allowed. Papers which are not substantially based on our course readings are unlikely to earn a passing grade.

Design ( PowerPoint file and report)  your design must include some machine design elements (gear, springs, screw, clutches, cam& followers, shaft). There must be some analysis (failure ctiteria, fatigu, fracture, stabilit, vibratio, impact, etc) and synthesis.  *outcome F ( have a clear understanding of their professional and ethnical responsibilities as mechanical engineers)  pick your favorite project.   

1. The Bill of Rights: Analyze and explain what each one of the first ten amendments means to you personally. You can find the Bill of Rights online.

In her book, Silencing Political Dissent, Constitutional lawyer Nancy Chang argues that the current War on Terror follows a pattern in American history – namely, the federal government has infringed upon American citizens\’ rights (found in the Bill of Rights, e.g., see the First and Fourth Amendments) arguably to keep Americans safe. Further, she spends quite a bit of time analyzing the problems associated with the Patriot Act signed by President George W. Bush 45 days after the terrorist attacks on 9/11/01. IN TWO GENEROUS PARAGRAPHS, DISCUSS THE PROS AND CONS OF THE PATRIOT ACT. YOU MUST CITE CHANG\’S BOOK. YOU MUST CITE AT LEAST ONE SCHOLARLY JOURNAL ARTICLE (ie, that is peer reviewed and that cites other scholars\’ work, by definition) OR MORE RECENT (i.e., AFTER 2002) NEWS ACCOUNT. THEN TYPE A THIRD GENEROUS PARAGRAPH DESCRIBING YOUR CONCLUSION ABOUT THE MERITS OF THE PATRIOT ACT – HERE, DO THE PROS OUT WEIGH THE CONS, OR VICE VERSA. WHY?
THE GRADING RUBRIC IS: Up to one letter grade reduction for: 1) each paragraph (3 total) that is either too brief, lacks thorough explanation, or simply replicates Chang\’s (or others\’) ideas without analyzing them in a plausible way; 2) failing to cite Chang\’s book within the body of your discussion (e.g., Chang, p. 26) where relevant; 3) failing to cite at least one outside news or journal article (see JSTOR database for potentially useful scholarly sources).

The paper must be 3-5 pages long, double spaced, 12pt times new roman and it must be on one of the artist I lectured about either in project 1 or project 2. Refer to the lecture power points I have sent you. Provide a detailed technical description or summary of their work (journalistic approach not a reflection of your opinion) then write a few paragraphs focusing on your personal critical insight / response to the work. How do you interpret or react to it? How does their work affect you? How does it fit into or not fit into what we have learned and practiced in class? Provide outside research you have done as well as images you have looked at. Pretty much like the Art into Words but more elaborate and about an artists body of work instead of just one piece.
