The sustainability debate considered in the examination concerns whether Integrated Reporting represents a positive development to meet the objectives of sustainable reporting
You will need to understand:
What is the importance of sustainability in terms of business reporting. You should be able to explore the different ideas around sustainability and perhaps be able to link this to perspectives on organisational purpose (Pristine capitalist through to Deep ecologist) and consider the range from economic sustainability through to planetary sustainability. This is a huge debate and your take on it will go some way to inform your discussions.
What is the role of Integrated reporting in meeting the needs for sustainable reporting and where is it currently heading is it moving towards a perspective on sustainable that regards issues only from a business risk perspective or is it helping to move towards a real engagement with the need to maintain environmental and social capital.
How has the IR agenda developed and is there evidence that it is being captured by big business/ regulators/ professional bodies/ big 4 etc. and what does this mean to the engagement with the sustainable agenda?
What are the concerns/ comments of the corporate reporting dialogue and the differing perspectives of the US regarding materiality and comparability/consistency vs Europe
Is there evidence that the IR engagement depends on preexisting levels of CSR engagement?
What do the different academics think of the development of IR and its importance to the development of more sustainable business practice?
