SUGGESTED GUIDELINES:
1. Examine each work thoroughly. Compare and contrast the following themes:
a. What are the most important political ideas or themes presented in each book?
b. Identify & discuss, if any, the political perspectives of the main characters at the onset of the story?
c. Identify & discuss any incidents that challenge or provoke the perspectives of the characters?
d. How do these incidents influence the outcome of the story?
e. What new insights did you, as reader & student, gain from reading these works?

2. Form & length: ALL essays must be typewritten and double-spaced, and at least 6 pages in length (250 words per page). Please edit your essay for grammatical and spelling errors. Such errors are distracting and makes the essay more difficult to read. Style manuals are available at the bookstore and are helpful in writing essays.

3. Remember to use a title page that includes your name (first and last), date and course information. Please staple your papers in the upper left hand corner and do not use report covers.

4. You may choose any PAIR of works listed. Do NOT break up the pairs of booksno switching around! Fiction and non-fiction books are included on the list. The general topic is also noted. Most of the books are available in paperback form and are available at most bookstores, libraries and on the Internet. No substitutions are allowed.

Influence of verbal language, images and music during the Civil Rights Movement

Combination of sociology and history. All sources MUST BE books or journal articles. 15 or more sources are required. IN-TEXT REFERENCING AND REFERENCE LIST REQUIRED APA.

The MAIN IDEA in each paragraph is HOW each platform affected its audience and HOW it caused/motivated change. HOW each made the community aware of racial segregation and racism AND HOW each brought communities together, helping to improve the quality of life.

Paragraph 1: 366 words including in-text referencing. 3 examples of speeches given during civil rights movement (including Martin Luther King\’s \”I have a dream\”. EXPLAIN how the choice of words IN EACH SPEECH influenced people (i.e. how it made racial injustice apparent to the \’white\’ population\’ and how it gave the African American population strength and courage) and explain how this was achieved (i.e. rhetocial language, biblical references, repetition, the way in which the speech was delivered). Also, highlight how this attracted mass media. PLEASE USE QUOTES FROM SPEECHES AS EXAMPLES.

Paragraph 2: 366 words including in-text referencing. Give 3 examples of newspaper titles AND 3 examples of photographs (i.e. Charles Moore) that circulated the US during the Civil Rights Movement. INCLUDE ALL NEWSPAPER ARTICLES AND IMAGES. MAKE SURE ALL THESE ARE REFERENCED. EXPLAIN where each is from, what each says/shows (i.e. from which specific protest) AND MOST IMPORTANTLY explain their impact on the community (i.e. how did if make the African American and \’white\’ community feel AND HOW did it lead to change.

Paragraph 3: 366 words including in-text referencing. What types of music where influential during the movement (i.e. spirituals, gospels and folk music) and when was music experienced (i.e. churches, etc.)? HOW did it make people feel and HOW did it result in change? People to maybe look at would be Guy and Candie Carawan, Pete Seeger and Jamilia Jones – BUT not sure how useful. Might need better examples. INCLUDE SONGS AND ARTISTS AT LEAST 3 OF EACH. Quote song lyrics please when explaining them their purpose and meaning.

Conclusion: Tie everything together explaining the importance of language, images and music in the civil rights movement. How did they highlighted racism and segregation AND resulted in change?
