Priesthood
The position of priesthood in the church has been evident since the
earliest existence of the church. Jewish priests first were established in the
seventh century BC performing religious ceremonies. They were even more
established around 950 BC due to the establishment of the Temple in Jerusalem.
The major role of the traditional Jewish priest was to perform
sacrificial rituals. According to the Bible, the Temple was built as a place for
God to live with the people. It was the holiest building that existed, and
needed to be kept holy by the priests. Their role of the priests was to perform
animal sacrifices to God as an offering. The priests performed these sacrifices
as specialists on behalf of a community or congregation in order to restore the
holiness of the community and of the Temple. It was believed that if there was
sin among the people then God would not come and be with them.
After the Temple was destroyed during the war with Rome, these animal
sacrifices were stopped, and there were no more active Jewish priests. The
religious leadership in the synagogue was led by the rabbis.
In the Protestant religion there exists a \”priesthood of all
believers\”(\”Priesthood\”, 529). This meant that each member in the community
serves as his or her own priest, with direct access to communication with God.
Protestants believe that the role of the priest is an \”officiating
mediary\”(\”Priesthood\”, 529), rather than a one who performs ritual sacrifices.
This stems from the Protestant belief that Jesus Christ served as \”the ultimate\”
sacrifice, and therefore there is no use in animal sacrifices. Protestants also
do not call their religious leaders \”priests\” because the name itself implies
that he is of a higher level than his fellow man or that he has more access to
God than others.
There exists two different forms of priesthood: hereditary and
vocational priests. A hereditary priest is a limited position in that it can
only be held by a person who a direct descendent of the tribe of Levi. This
tribe is one of the original 12 tribes of Israel as set forth in Genesis 49.
There exists among this tribe one High Priests who head of the other priests. He
is the only priest who was allowed to view the holy Ark of the Covenant during
the existence of the Temple in Jerusalem. These hereditary priests, unlike most
priests in today\’s society, were allowed to marry in order to carry on the line
of priesthood

1. Locate a scholarly journal article from the last 5 years (see slides posted in Blackboard). This
article can be on any topic.
2. Download and read the article (focus on the methods section).
3. APA Citations: in-text and reference list
Your article review should include the following:
a. Intro: 1 3 sentences briefly telling the reader what was done.
i. Do not write any more than 3 sentences, if you have written more than 3
sentences go back and redo it. This is not a major section of this review and you
will lose points if you focus all of your writing in this section.
b. Research Design: This is a major section of this review. Tell the reader that type of
research design was used by the author(s) and the error associated with it (use the RD
Table). Also, what criteria of causality can this study established based on the RD. Finally,
relate O=T+E to the RD used by the author(s).
i. I suggest you locate a study that uses one of the nine RDs listed on the RD Table.
It will make writing this review easier for you, but it is up to you.
c. Sample Design: This is a major section of this review. Tell the reader how the sample
was obtained for this study and is it an R or A/C and what does that mean. Relate O=T+E
to this sample.
i. Use the Sample Table to assist you on this section.
ii. If the study you select is a secondary analysis you might have to look into how the
original data collectors obtained their sample (most of the time you do not).
d. Data Design: This is a major section of this review. Tell the reader how the data was
obtain for this study. Did they use a survey and if you what type (see the pdf on survey
collection types). You may use the response rates if needed. Relate the sample to O=T+E.
i. Please note Data Design is not data analysis. If you focus on data analysis you will
lose points because that is not how the data was obtained. The only numbers in
your review should be the sample size and the response rate.
ii. If you use a secondary analysis, study you will have to read as to how the data
was originally collected (might have to look it up). Usually, the author(s) will
discuss how the data was originally collected.
iii. It will be easier for you to write if they used one of the methods listed on the pdf
concerning survey collection methods.
e. Conclusion: Based on the above, relate the entire study to O=T+E. Also, offer suggestions
as to a way forward. How can the next study reduce error based on Research Design,
Sample Design, and Data Design?
5. Overall this article review needs to be at most 2 pages (typed, 12 Font, Times New Roman, Double
Spaced. with Justified Margins [this document has justified margins]). Also, make sure you have
APA in-text citations and that your reference list is IAW APA (you will only have one reference).
Compose a magazine-type article where you review and discuss the book as it applies to today\’s teenagers and the world they are growing up in.
In the video, 21 Up in America, we saw the move into adulthood of a number of children born into diverse socio-economic locations. For this assignment, you must write a 4-6 page essay in which you examine the circumstances, experiences, and life courses of at least three of these children. Compare and contrast how the historical and social structural context affected their economic, cultural, and social capital. Compare and contrast, as well, how their individual strategies benefited or suffered from access to those resources. Consider the significance of both family and education in their lives.
Your essay should consider the points above and present a thoughtful, complex assessment of how the lives of these individuals should inform our understanding of the American Dream, that is, the idea that America is a meritocracy in which everyone has equal opportunities for success. Look at the rubric attached to this assignment. Make sure your essay addresses all the standards.
Your essay should be double-spaced. Use the APA format for citing sources, though you need not provide a title page or abstract for your essay.
English 1 Essay #2 (First Draft due Friday, April 7th, Saturday, April 8th)
Requirements: This essay must be typed and double spaced. Use normal sized fonts and margins. The essay should be approximately one thousand words in length, or approximately three to four pages typed and double spaced.
Topic: The basic purpose of the essay will be to explain the difference between right and wrong. Begin your essay with a specific example, which you analyze in terms of what you think is right or wrong in regards to that example. It is better to use an actual example than a hypothetical example. The best kind of example is one in which what is right and wrong may not be immediately clear to everyone. Include enough details with this example so that it is clear exactly what happened in this case and so that the moral or ethical implications involved can be considered.
Derive a clear set of principles of right and wrong from this initial example which you can then apply to your understanding of right and wrong under principles of justice, ethics, or morality. Include at least one other detailed example in some other part of your essay to illustrate how your understanding or right and wrong can be applied in a variety of situations. Examples can be drawn from any current or recent controversy dealing with ideas of justice or morality or equality, such as controversies involving voting rights, racial profiling, homosexual rights, prayer in school, or any other controversy that comes up during group discussion or class discussion.
You should focus on attempting to distinguish between right and wrong in regard to ONE of the following concepts: justice, ethics, or morality. Although justice, ethics, and morality have basic similarities in meaning, by focusing on one of these concepts in your understanding of right and wrong, you should focus on one particular way in which concepts of right and wrong can be addressed. Your essay should advance a single understanding of right and wrong. While you may indicate that different people and/or different cultures may differ in their understanding of right and wrong, you must resolve any differences into a clear thesis of what you believe is the difference between right and wrong.
Justice: If you focus on right and wrong as understood in justice, you should focus on ideas related to what is right and wrong under the law. In focusing on justice under the law, you can concentrate on ideas such as what the law should be that is, what principles should determine which kinds of actions should be permitted or prohibited by the law and how the law should be enforced, what kinds of rules should be in force to make sure that laws are fairly enforced by police officers and/or that trials are fairly conducted in courts of law.
Ethics: If you focus on right and wrong as understood in ethics, you should focus on the idea of ethical responsibility toward others. Concentrate on situations in which principles of ethics should be used to determine what a person should or should not do and explain what you think a person should or should not do according to those principles. Articulate a clear set of principles that determine your concept of an ethic and discuss to whom and/or to what those principles should apply. Do you think that a sense of ethics should apply equally to all people or that there can be some differences in the ways that people are treated? Do you think that ideas of ethics should be applied to things beyond just other people; should we follow a sense of ethical responsibility toward in animals in regard to issues such as eating meat or to elements of the environment in regard to issues such as land use or exploitation of energy sources?
Morality: If you focus on right and wrong as understood in morality, you should focus on fundamental ideas of right and wrong. Include some consideration of where you think ideas of right and wrong come from. Should people refer to religious belief in determining what is right and wrong, or do you think that religious belief is unnecessary or even counter-productive in determining what is morally right and wrong? Further consider whether, based on your idea of where moral principles should come from, what limitations there should be on the ways that people act or even on the ways that people think.
You should also refer to ideas from at least three of the readings in A World of Ideas, by writers such as Cicero, Martin Luther King, John Stuart Mill, Stephen L. Carter, Plato, Rene Descartes, Friedrich Nietzsche, Iris Murdoch, Judith Butler, and/or Michael Gazzaniga. You may also include ideas from one or more of the essays from earlier in the semester or essays that were not assigned from A World of Ideas, such as essays by Thomas Jefferson, Aristotle, Milton and Rose Friedman, or Lao-Tzu. Instructions were to pick 3 feminists – Simone de Beauvoir, Germaine Greer and Emma Watson (one for each body paragraph). Then to explain how these feminists would feel about the Women in Othello and how they are treated – Desdemona, Emilia and Bianca.
Structure of this essay is the basic introduction, three body paragraphs and a conclusion.
In the body paragraphs (each feminist has their own), quotes have to be used – for example, Simone de Beauvoir said, No one is more arrogant toward women, more aggressive or scornful, than the man who is anxious about his virility, – this could be linked to moments before Othello strangled and killed Desdemona for assuming she had slept with Cassio and therefore made him a cuckold.
