Project description
The Research Proposal

Hand in date 12th July 2016 @ 4pm. Additional guidance

Write a research proposal addressing your identified topic. You should have agreed the topic and focus with the module leader/your seminar tutor before submission.

The proposal should be 2000 words in length and needs to include a preliminary review of the literature (at least 6-7 sources).

It should use the following structure as a guide (rather than a prescription- you should adjust to suit your particular proposal as appropriate):

1.Title and title page
2. Abstract
3. Introduction
Area and topic
background and context
statement of purpose (Aim: i.e. what you want to achieve)
why its worth doing (significance)
4. Objectives (i.e. how you will achieve your aim (s)
5.Methodology and methods
6.The Literature
7. Ethical considerations
8. Timetable for completion of the dissertation

Your proposal should be designed and written so that it would explain and justify your study to a non-expert.

Title
This should say as much as possible in as few words as possible. Examples:
A case study of the impact of Anti-Social Behaviour Orders on youth nuisance on X estate in Y
or
Counting the cost of independence: a study of older people in sheltered housing in Manchester receiving preventive equipment and adaptations services

Abstract
A brief summary (of the whole proposal). It is like an executive summary and fulfils the same objectives. It should say:

What the work is about and what it aims to achieve;
How it intends to do it

It is the last thing to be written.

Introduction
This section sets the scene. It should convey how the proposed study fits in to what is known about the area under discussion, and locate it in relation to current knowledge and practice.

Creswell (1994) suggest four components:

Establishing the problem leading to the study
Casting the problem within the literature
Discussing deficiencies within the literature about the problem
Noting the significance of the problem

Significance
This relates to the importance of, justification for or contribution of the study i.e. why is it worth doing. There are generally three areas of significance: to knowledge; to policymakers; to practitioners. The last two are most likely to be relevant.

Research Aim/Problem
This section should tell the reader what questions the research is trying to answer.

The Literature
This identifies the body of literature relevant to the study (6-7 sources). This should be approx 1000 words

Methodology and methods
Clarify here what the overall approach to the study is to be remember it is a review of the literature although you may use quantitative and qualitative sources.

References
All cited references should be here. Use the University guidelines to compile the list properly.

Timetable (include as an appendix so it doesnt count in the word count)
This should include a timetable for your dissertation

Tips – Designing your research proposal

The most important part of the task is to get the research question(s) right.

There are three questions you need to be able to answer

What is the research trying to find out/what question(s) is it trying to answer?

How will the proposed research answer the question?

Why is the research worth doing?

Socrates
