The Senior Technology Portfolio Manager works with the KAUST research community to lead commercialization efforts, including patent management, technology development, sponsored research, translational and gap funding initiatives, and license negotiations. This position manages patent administration for the invention portfolio for which she /he is responsible.
Major Responsibilities
Contribute to development of intellectual property identification, assessment, protection, and dissemination strategies and business models in pursuit of KAUSTs economic development mission
Conduct special projects as assigned
Evaluate new technologies for patentability and commercialization potential, focusing on identifying those opportunities with high value and high impact potential, and engage and manage third-party tools and experts as appropriate in this process
Supervises the development of key value propositions for new technologies and the identification of target market segments in order to ensure a comprehensive business and technology development case is developed and presented
Supervises market scanning and studies in order to identify potential technology development opportunities such as prototype development, partnering and licensing opportunities based on the KAUST research capabilities and existing portfolio
Oversee patent prosecution for new technologies, review work product, define patent prosecution strategy, and support management of patent budget for a portfolio of technologies
Identify and connect with potential licensing partners and customers in order to market high value technologies and projects
Negotiate licenses and other IP-related agreements aligned with KAUSTs economic and business development strategies
Establish strong relationships with KAUST faculty, deans, center directors and administration, and maintain current knowledge of KAUST research plans, programs, and collaborations
Coach and develop KAUST inventors and entrepreneurs (including faculty members, research scientists, students, and post-docs) to advance technologies towards commercialization
Develop, track and report metrics and KPIs for TTO
Evaluate specialized vendors for patent management, analytics, and market research services
Work with colleagues within KAUST Innovation to prepare marketing plans and materials for marketing technologies to potential partners and to present or share at relevant conferences and exhibitions
Mentor, train and develop junior staff in intellectual property, contracting, and business analysis
Write strategy papers and make oral and written presentations for faculty and senior management

Technical Skills
Strong technical background in a Physical Sciences discipline
Advanced knowledge of intellectual property law, contracting practices, and business and technology trends
Proven track record identifying opportunities and structuring and implementing new company formation or commercialization deals
Proven track record of developing partnerships with industrial partners (e.g., joint technology development projects and commercialization agreements)
Working knowledge of the challenges and market opportunities in a number of relevant industry sectors
Experience with face-to-face negotiations of complex agreements with minimal supervision
Successful experience in solving patentability, ownership and inventor ship problems through negotiation and through application of IP law and policy
Facility with patent law of the US, EU or Asian country
Facility with patent and commercial assessment tools and analytics
Non-Technical Skills or Attributes
High level personal and professional achievement in a university or industry environment.
Well developed business and technical written and oral communication skills.
English proficiency in legal, business and scientific vocabularies.
