Chapter 9 explored the impact of significant attempts to control costs and maintain quality in health care. Key innovations in cost control have included selective contracting, cost sharing, and managed care. With recent moves toward Accountable Care Organizations, Patient Centered Medical Homes, and payment bundling, cost sharing mechanisms will likely change for consumers.

How concerned should we be about the decline in health service utilization reported by researchers due to cost sharing by consumers?
