Max Weber (view Chapter 8 attachment) is not the only scholar to contend that religion can exert an important influence on the process of social change. Elie Halvy (18701937), a Frenchman and noted historian who wrote at about the same time as Weber, was primarily interested in the stability of English society during the 18th and 19th centuries.
The Halvy thesis suggests that Methodism, under the influence of John Wesley (17031791) and his followers, provided a kind of escape valve for the discontented English working class. This religious faith became a mechanism for dissent, an outlet for opposition to everything from labor practices to the monarchy itself. Yet this opposition was basically peaceful and was oriented to social reform rather than revolutionary change. From a Marxist point of view, Methodists were not part of the ruling bourgeoisie, yet they served the interests of the wealthy and powerful. For Halvy, the rise of Methodism explains why England, of all the nations of Europe, was most free from political disorders and revolutions during the 18th and 19th centuries.
Halvys thesis has been criticized; in fact, many of the objections are similar to those raised in response to Webers monumental work. Some critics have argued that Halvy exaggerates the influence of Methodism and fails to explain the lack of revolt in England before this religion arose. Nonetheless, Halvys work, like Webers, contains important insights regarding the relationship between religious beliefs and the process of social change. See Elie Halvy. Discuss Weber\’s and Halevy\’s ideas regarding the effect of Methodism on the English people. No plagiarism please :-).
Discussion Question: Indicators of Suicide
Increased stress levels, feeling hopeless and alone, being bullied, or experiencing repeated physical or sexual abuse could all be reasons why some adolescents consider suicide. Adolescent suicide has far-reaching consequences on families, friends, communities, and schools. For this Discussion, use the Parker Family case study to consider the indicators of suicide. Also think about how you might react to students in this situation if you were a social worker in a school.
Post by Day 3 your answer to the following:
After learning about the character in the Parker Family case study, imagine that you were the school social worker. Which indicators would you have looked for and why.
How would you have responded to each of those indicators?
What kinds of questions would you have asked and why?
(1) Pick a social, political, or moral issue that you are interested in, and spend a page laying out the problem. Some examples are: animal rights, environmentalism, euthanasia, immigration reform, assisted suicide, bioethics, etc. The only topic you cannot write on is death penalty or abortion, since those were the topics for response papers 4 and 5
(2) Once you have laid out the problem, take a side and defend it (very much as in response papers 4 and 5). Develop a well constructed thesis, and then argue in defense of that thesis. Your arguments need to be original, and should not simply reconstruct the arguments of others. For example, if you write about gun control, you should not say things like \”guns don\’t kill people, people kill people\”, as this has already been said by dozens of others. Or, you should avoid recourse to the second amendment or personal safety. If you wrote about gun control, I am looking for original arguments, not the arguments of others. This applies to whatever topic you choose to write about. It is fine to discuss the existing debate, but I want you to develop your own arguments for your chosen thesis. You need to provide 3 arguments in defense of your thesis.
Should be 3-4 full pages, Times New Roman, Double Spaced, 12 Point Font. You do NOT need any secondary sources for this paper. I am looking for creative, original thinking, that engages with the course material, not the secondary thoughts of an academic scholar.
Do some research on the abortion debate, researching both sides and the arguments that are made to defend both sides: research the pro-choice arguments and the pro-life arguments. After researching both sides of the abortion debate:
(i) take a position on the abortion debate (either pro-choice or pro-life) and develop a thesis
(ii) come up with three arguments in defense of your thesis
(iii) write a conclusion as a result of your arguments on the abortion debate
Should be 3-5 pages, 12 point font, double spaced, times new roman
(1) Pick any of the philosophers from the course that have been studied
(2) Select a small aspect of their philosophy that you found interesting (i.e. free will in Sartre, categorical imperative in Kant, love in Plato, etc.)
(3) Go to the library or the online database and find 2 sources: these must be from physical books or electronic journals, not web sources. You are, however, permitted to use journal articles so long as they are in the library\’s online database.
(4) Research your topic in more detail and then write a 4-5 page paper.
Guidelines
Quotations should be kept to a minimum. All quotations must be in MLA style
4-5 Pages, Times New Roman, Double Spaced, 12 Point Font
Avoid long summaries
Offer your own unique thinking about a philosophical topic, and use the secondary sources to elaborate on it. I would suggest reading a few good essays about the philosopher that you\’re writing about.
This is a major paper. It will be graded more seriously than the response papers. I will be looking for creativity, originality, independence of thinking, depth of secondary sources, and clarity in presentation. I suggest that you have someone proofread your essay before you turn it in, as it is a very large chunk of your grade.
If you could make a movie on a language-related topic that would be viewed by every single American, what topic would you choose? Please explain what information you would try to convey in the video, why you chose that topic over all others, and what changes you hope it would make in society for everyone to become more informed about that topic. Be creative — don\’t just state the topic, but let us know how you will communicate it and what you will shoot. Notice, the movie doesn\’t have to be documentary, it can also be a fiction.
Have your language attitudes towards any language variety (language, dialect, etc.) changed during the course of taking this class? If so, how? If not, which attitudes do you think you still hold that you always did and what factors contribute to them? Please take a critical look at your own language attitudes and discuss whether you think knowing more about different dialects or foreign accents changes how you feel about them, or whether your language attitudes are just a reflection of your social attitudes and thus aren\’t changed based on information about the language varieties themselves. Do you think linguistics should be taught in schools? Do you think it will affect the situation in the country and people\’s views?
