Watch the following 3 short youtube videos and answer the questions below each clip. Your answers are your opinion and subjective. You will be evaluated on following directions and effort. I suggest at least 2-3 sentences per questions.

The video clips come from The Color of Fear. The Color of Fear (1994) is an insightful, groundbreaking film about the state of race relations in America as seen through the eyes of eight North American men of Asian, European, Latino and African descent. In a series of intelligent, emotional and dramatic confrontations the men reveal the pain and scars that racism has caused them. What emerges is a deeper sense of understanding and trust. This is the dialogue most of us fear, but hope will happen sometime in our lifetime.

1. JUST BE AMERICAN

Link
CLIP1: Tensions begin to build as the term American is discussed in greater depth.

Why do you think David C. (main white gentleman) gets excited or is troubled when people of color say they are something other than just Americans?
What are your thoughts on hyphenated Americans (African-American, Asian-American, Mexican-American, etc.)?
Can you be an American and still hyphenate your identity?
Do you agree with David C.s comments about clinging being the problem preventing people of color from becoming American?
What other problems besides clinging might pose obstacles to people of color in becoming American?
David C. also states: Why cant people of color just be individuals and go out and make a place for themselves? Comment on this.

2. WHAT IT MEANS TO BE AMERICAN

Link

CLIP 2: Victor (African American gentleman in purple shirt) comments on the frustration felt by people of color while attempting to educate White people about racism and then being cross-examined and having their experience discredited or invalidated. Victor then becomes more emotional, impatient, and passionate about whiteness as the American ideal.

What do you think Victor means when he refers to a silent consciousness about what it means to be American that he senses coming from Whites?
What does Victor mean when he says: racism is essentially a White problem?
Is there a difference between Black people being racists towards Whites and White people being racist towards Blacks? Explain.
Victor claims that American and White and human have become synonyms. What does he mean by this? If its true, how does this affect White people? How does it affect people of color?
How does the statement, Why cant we just treat each other as human beings? negate the experience and sense of identity of people of color?
What was Victor trying to express when he said: Im unpalatable to you?
How did you feel when Victors emotions were very high? Could you identify with these emotions? Do you find them frightening and offensive? Do you think Victor is being violent?

3. RED GROUND

CLIP 3: David C. denies the existence of a White identity and accuses Victor of blocking his own progress. Victor accuses David C. of being embed in a blame the victim mindset, and for failing to acknowledge that his family land was stolen from murdered or displaced Indians, that it is, in fact, Red Ground.

David C. says, I never consider myself as part of an ethnic group. Does this claim match your experience? Do you think this is a meaningful statement? Why or why not
Comment on David C.s accusations of Victor blocking his own progress.
What does it mean to blame the victim? Is David C. blaming the victim?
Who is Victor most afraid of? Why?
How did you respond to Victor saying Youre standing on Red Ground?
What did Victor mean when he said mystify the whole process?

Nevertheless, there is considerable evidence that patients and their designated health care proxies are not brought into decision making at the end of life in a timely and effective way.

Provide your impression by responding to the questions below and provide supporting references for your position. This commentary should be at least 3 to 5 pages, with references in APA format. The Patient Self-Determination Act, a federal law that went into effect in 1991, requires health care institutions to advise patients about their right to accept or refuse medical care and to offer them an opportunity to create an advance directive indicating their medical choices, should they become incompetent. Nevertheless, there is considerable evidence that patients and their designated health care proxies are not brought into decision making at the end of life in a timely and effective way. There are also some limits on what kind of information must be provided to patients. In the 1993 case of Arato v. Avedon, the California Supreme Court supported information sharing and patient-centered decision making, but ruled that doctors need not supply explicit statistical information about life expectancy to patients. Nonetheless, the concept of informed consent from Western political and ethical theories that place a high value on individual self-determination, remains a central principle in the U.S. Cultural groups who have different traditions may not share this value.\” (Levine, 2007, p. 20)Should informed consent be different for different cultures? Why or why not? How should medical professionals and health care organizations balance cultural preferences with full disclosure?Levine, C. (2007). You are about to start a business (you pick). Spend a sentence or two describing it.  Also assume that you need $100,000 to get started and while you have $10,000 of your own, somehow you will need to “find” the other $90,000. In addition to yourself, assume also that you will need to hire at least one person full-time to assist you. Based on the above, and using the materials covered in this class only, describe: 1)      The best form of business organization you would select for your business and why. In discussing “why”, please be sure and describe the basis for your selection including the pros and cons over all other available alternatives (60%); 2)      The implications and requirements associated with obtaining the additional $90,000 (in terms of equity or debt financing, securities laws and regulations, etc.) (20%); and 3)      Specific requirements and considerations regarding employment law as it relates to the scenario that is outlined above (20%). NOTE: The three above sections are NOT weighted equally. Therefore you should allocate your time (and space on the 5 pages of your take-home midterm accordingly). At the end of your essay you must print the following and then sign: “I hereby affirm that no one has assisted me in producing my essay answer and that I have not discussed its contents (either in draft or final form) with anyone.”
