Task Description: You will create one of the following types of units of study:
Genre Study- A genre study focuses on one genre of literature such as fairy tale, folk tale, poetry, picture book, nonfiction (such as biographies or descriptive reports, persuasive writing, scientific explanations), or short story. Students will read and write in that genre and through reading in that genre, learn about the text features and characteristics of that genre.
Author Study-Students will read and explore the works of one specific author. Through reading that authors works, they will learn about the authors craft and style of writing. Students can then apply what they have learned to their own writing and will also write in response to reading that authors works.
Thematic Study-Students will explore a specific theme by reading texts across genres that address that theme. Some popular themes include: friendship, bullying, growing up, love, family, community, courage, animals, celebration, neighborhoods, war, overcoming hardships or handicaps, struggle, kindness, etc.

a. Description of the Context: Describe the school, type of community, grade the unit is intended for and types of students (ELLs, their needs, overall reading levels, interests-half a page)
b. Rationale and description of the unit including curricular context: what type of unit, what it will be about, what types of activities, How is the unit connected to cross curricular? Why are you teaching this unit? How will your unit benefit your students? Why is it needed? What do you hope students will gain from learning this unit?
c. Essential Question: The Essential question is a wide, open-ended question that guides your entire unit. Each lesson in your unit should lead students to be able to answer that question by the end of the unit. The question goes on the top of each lesson to keep the teacher and students focused on that goal.
d. Goals and Objectives for the Unit/Student Outcomes: You will list your goals for the unit and objectives. Remember that goals are long-term aims that you want to accomplish. Objectives are concrete, measurable, and observable steps to accomplish those wide goals. (For example, a goal for a unit on the theme of community might be to get students to better understand how diverse people in a neighborhood can come together will common goals. An objective for that unit might be: Students will be able to compare and contrast two jobs within a community. Goals are wide and cannot be measured. Objectives are specific.
