Explain the im-portant arguments/views/ideas that the paper is addressing; this sets the stage for your argument for your thesis

It should be 3-4 double-spaced pages (12 Font), following this basic structure:

1. SHORT INTRODUCTION: a thesis statement and a lead-in for your reader, briefly explaining what you are going to do in the paper

2. EXPLANATION/BACKGROUND: a clear explanation and exposition of the im-portant arguments/views/ideas that the paper is addressing; this sets the stage for your argument for your thesis

3. ARGUMENT: this is the analytic/philosophic heart of the paper, in which you make your case for the thesis you stated in your intro

4. SUMMARY: here you briefly summarize what you have done in the paper, to wrap it up for your reader

TOPICS
You may choose one of the general topics below, or you may choose a topic of your own based on the relevant readings. The latter option requires my approval. Here are my topic suggestions:

1. Searle considers six objections to the Chinese Room, numbered in his paper I-VI. He offers a response to each one. Select one objection to analyze. Explain in depth both the objection and his response. If you think his response is inade-quate, explain why. If you think his response is spot on, explain why.
3. Compare and contrast the views of either (a) Dennett and Nagel or (b) Dennett and Chalmers. Who in your view has a better hold on the nature of consciousness, and why?
4. Explain Chalmers hard problem of consciousness. Evaluate his suggestions for how to begin to solve it. Is there really a hard problem, after all?
5. Singer holds that we have a moral responsibility to contribute to ending world poverty. Consider his view as a whole, as you find it in the paper and in the Ted Talk. Give a brief explanation of it. Respond critically.
6. Singer discusses many objections to his view. Select *one*. Clearly explain it after giving a brief explanation of his basic view. Evaluate this objection.
7. Explain Singers basic view in his paper Animal Liberation. Be sure to include an explanation of his concept of equal consideration. Respond to his view.
