In this section, the goal is to understand the connection between Politics (as political science, not policy or ideology) and Ethics. While we may be a bit cynical in its real world observation, the idea is that politicians have the \”good\” of their people in mind when they legislate. So, political decisions and structures of government are based, in theory, on deeper concepts of human nature and what is \”good\” for people.
Read Hobbes\’ Leviathan, followed by Nietzsche\’s Twilight of the Idols and Lastly, have a look at Mill\’s On Liberty as well as the documents from our own Founders.
There are obviously many examples of governments and political regimes, which very greatly in their fundamental values. We will look at three – monarchy, aristocracy and republicanism as a few examples among many. What we hope to see is the connection between the values which constitute a government and the view of human nature and ethics which inform it. That is, the way one views what is \”good\” and the character of human nature, will lead them to certain perspectives as to what type of governing structure will most efficiently bring about that good.
The question, like all the rest, will ask you to evaluate the arguments for each perspective studied in the module and choose which you find most appealing (rationally). Remember to engage the text and only use direct quotes throughout the paper to provide support for your answer and answer the question. NO OUTSIDE SOURCES. Here is the question:
Consider the three perspectives on \”good\” government we looked at in this module. Notice that each of them is based on an opinion or conception of human nature and how to create order based on that conception. Which perspective do you find most accurate and hence the best form of government? Why? (make sure you engage the text of the appropriate perspective)
