Research Paper Guidelines
Toward the end of the semester, you will turn be submitting your Final Research Paper. We will complete this assignment in stages, but it is a good idea to get started early since this assignment is worth 50% of your total grade for the course. During the semester, we will read from Literature for Composition, but you will also need to pick a novel (or a play) from the list below. I suggest you pick one, order it, and start reading soon so you are not caught off guard when it\’s time to submit assignments.
Your research paper will be on a book of your choice from the following list:

The novel (or play) will be the primary source for your research paper.
Typed: Your research paper must be typed. (Remember: Times New Roman, 12 pt. Font, Double Spaced)
Length: Your paper must be a minimum of five pages of double-spaced text. You will also be required to include a works cited page. You works cited page should be the last page of your essay. (The easiest way to do this is to insert a page break at the end of your paper and then copy and paste your works cited.) Do not use a title page. Including your primary source, you must use at least four sources. You will also need to find additional sources, one of which needs to be an article from a BPCC Literature Database. You must use a minimum of four sources. At least two of your sources should come from the BPCC library\’s databases.
I suggest you include biographical information regarding the authors from the American Writers or Contemporary Literary Criticism reference series in BPCCs library.
Format: Your paper must be in MLA (Modern Language Association) format as demonstrated in your MLA Handbook. You are expected to list each of you sources in a proper MLA formatted Works Cited Page, and you are expected to use proper parenthetical (internal) documentation throughout your paper as needed.
Writing Guidelines:
Text: Your paper will examine a particular authors work. It is NOT a biographical sketch of your author, nor is it a summary of the selected work. You should focus your argument on the works themes, symbolism, character analysis, setting, representation, etc., and you should uses specific events and quotes from the work to support and explain that argument. One suggestion is to examine what literary critics have to say about the work and use their comments to help support your argument.
Grade: Your overall research paper grade will be based on five main stages: thesis statement, outline, rough draft, works cited page, and final draft that must include a corrected works cited page. Writing about literature

Generally one should use Third Person Point-of-View when discussing literature, but First Person POV is acceptable.
Use present tense when discussing a literary work or when reporting how critics view said work.

Use the full name of the author in your first reference and only use the last name in all subsequent references.
