A close reading involves a detailed examination of the literary elements used by the author to create meaning. Your paper should provide the basic information about the passage, observations on how the passage conveys meaning, and your own analysis and interpretation about the passage. Finally, your paper should demonstrate what your new understanding of the passage tells you about the main themes of the novel overall. Included in your paper should be a consideration of the main elements of fiction such as figurative language, tone, setting, specific word choices, and characterization, and what these details say about the larger themes or issues of the novel. Select your passage carefully, as it must be able to fulfill the above requirements.
Your paper should maintain a formal tone, style and diction without using the first person. It should have a formal thesis, introduction and conclusion and an internal structure outlined by topic sentences.
