In a new book, Time to Eat the Dog? The Real Guide to Sustainable Living, authors Robert and Brenda Vale argue that resources required to feed a dog — including the amount of land needed to feed the animals that go into its food — give it about twice the eco-footprint of fueling a gas-guzzling Toyota Land Cruiser. Noting that a cat\’s paw print was roughly equivalent to a Volkswagen Golf\’s, the magazine New Scientist asked an environmentalist at the Stockholm Environment Institute in York, U.K., to independently calculate animals\’ environmental impact. He reported that \”his figures tallied almost exactly\” with the Vales.
According to Children International, approximately 18,000 children die every day in the world from starvation and its related diseases all needless deaths. Even in the United States, one of the richest countries on earth, millions of people go to bed (if they have one) hungry. While at the same time, millions of animals live in warm, cozy homes getting fat. What has happened to our country? We allow millions of people to go hungry, but feed millions of animals?
Thankfully, this is changing. Since the year 2000 we have seen the demand for pets plummet to levels not seen since World War II, says Tacoma, Washingtons city animal director. Right now, people are choosing between their pets and their children. Even now, we still choose our own children over pets.
Animal lovers need not be shocked. While the number of pets left to die in animal shelters has risen dramatically– four million cats and dogsabout one every eight secondsare put down in U.S. shelters each year, it is still a relatively small percentage of the total pet population. Americans own 78 million dogs and 86 million cats.
It is impossible to determine how many stray dogs and cats live in the United States; estimates for cats alone range up to 70 million. The average number of litters a fertile cat produces is one to two a year; the average number of kittens is four to six per litter, or between 8 and 12 kittens a year. Proposals have been floated in some communities to license every pet, increase licensing fees and limit owners to no more than one dog and one cat. Fining violators would reduce over-population of pets and the millions of unwanted animals euthanized every year — which costs millions of dollars to taxpayers.
My children have been begging for a puppy for years, says Michelle Lee-Thomas, a mother of three. I would like to get a dog, but I am afraid of the costs. Dog food has gone up ten-fold, and doggie insurance too. Yes, they have pet health insurance! I cannot even afford health insurance for my kids.
While the average cost of owning a dog or cat can be as low as several hundred dollars a year for necessary shots and food, unwanted pets are more likely to be diseased and spread disease.
According to researchers at the Tacoma University Department of Animal Security, Americans no longer have the money to pay for such luxury goods as our furry friends. As a nation, we have our priorities completely backwards. If you took the money we all spend on pets, we could provide health insurance for the entire country.
According to the American Pet Products Associate, we spend over 50 billion dollars a year on pets, while spending only 14 billion dollars on school breakfast and lunch programs which try to meet needs for a growing population of students below the poverty level.
And now as Congress begins to implement expensive health care legislation, Tacoma U. has come up with a solution. Dr. Politha Urugai laughs. We need puppy death panels to reduce the millions of unwanted pets and public costs associated with warehousing and destroying abandoned animals.
