Any topic (writer’s choice)

Project description
Essay format : 12pt Times New Roman, 1.5 line spacing, page numbers. First page: title bold, student number, words count. Clear paragraphs throughout (not too short, not too long). Bibliography alphabetically (call the section References), under the essay (not on separate page). Use the Harvard system of referencing. In the text (Smith 2007: 25).

(1) ESSAY: 1700-2000 words
DUE: You must use academic referencing and a bibliography in this essay. Ensure that you structure your essay to make an argument, perhaps by breaking it into sections with an introduction and conclusion. Careful attention to layout (double/ 1 12 spacing) and using an appropriate font (such as Times New Roman) are all-important to contribute towards the academic requirements of essay writing. Please note that the essay question is asking you to directly anlayse a given number of films but to achieve greater scope you should watch more films and mention them in the essay (up to around 10).
Choose ONE of the following:
1. With reference to two films of your choice analyse the way in which one or more elements of style (mise-en-scne, cinematography, editing or sound) aid the narrative in conveying meanings and themes of the films.
2. With reference to at least two films, analyse the manner in which their narrative structures aid the content and meanings of the films.
3. Compare and contrast the main characteristics of German Expressionism and Italian Neo- Realism movements with reference to at least four films. What is the enduring legacy of German Expressionism and Italian Neo-Realism?
4. With reference to at least two films, analyse the extent to which they can be defined as belonging to a particular genre.
5. With reference to at least three films of a chosen director, describe and assess whether he can be called an auteur.
6. Describe, compare and contrast gender representation in Blade Runner (Ridley Scott 1982) and Ex Machina (Alex Garland 2015).
7. Describe and assess to what extent it is fair to say that Hollywood is a commercial industry with little regard for ‘art’ or creative expression.
8. Describe and discuss the main characteristics of The Romanian New Wave with reference to at least three films. What, do you think, the enduring legacy of The Romanian New Wave will be?

Current issue in congress

Project description
Overview
The purpose of this paper is to familiarize you with a current issue facing Congress and with how you can have your voice heard. Begin by finding out about current and upcoming issues before Congress. You could also address a regular occurring issue, such as the next budget or an issue that has been on-going, such as immigration. You can find information about issues facing Congress at the magazine Roll Call, the online news source, Politico or the New York Times Inside Congress page. Once youve identified a current issue that interests you, clear the topic with your instructor and then do some research. Submit your paper to the dropbox by midnight on Sunday.
Directions
Part 1
In a paper of about 3 pages (not counting a title page and bibliography) describe the major features of the issue. For example, for a bill you should describe the major provisions, as well as who will be affected and how. The paper should identify the major actors involved in the bill or issue and their efforts to support or oppose it. Those might be key members of Congress, organized interests, the President or others. Include the views of both proponents and opponents of the bill. Find out where your Representative or Senators stand on the issue. Conclude your paper by taking a stand on the issue. Explain and justify your position.
The library has databases of publications on its resource page that can help you find articles about your issue. Papers should include a bibliography with at least 3 sources used to investigate your issue. The bibliography and citations in the text should follow APA format. A very good source on current issues in the librarys databases is CQ Researcher that has full text reports on many current issues; youve been reading many of their reports each week. Recent issues of CQ Researcher might also give you an idea for a paper topic.
Part 2
The second part of the assignment is to write a letter to your member of the House or Senate or to the editor of a local newspaper about the issue or problem that you researched.
Letter writing tips: 1) Know what you’re talking about. 2) Be respectful. Even if you disagree with someone’s position, you can do so in a courteous way, 3) Be brief. Staffers don’t have a lot of time to devote to each letter. Keep the letters to no more than a page. Turn in a copy of the letter with the first part of your assignment. Send the original copy to the elected representative or the editor and see what kind of response you receive.

Unit 2

Dale and Mike Parak were twin brothers and best friends. They spent their entire lives looking out for each other’s interests. While growing up, the two were inseparable. They played sports together, double-dated frequently, and attended the same university. They grew closer as they aged, they got married at about the same time, and eventually, both were divorced. After they retired from their jobs, they decided to live together to save money, and they still enjoyed each other’s company. When he was 70 years old, Mike was diagnosed with cancer. Doctors predicted that he had about 6 months to live. The brothers agreed that Mike should not suffer. Mike and Dale wrote and signed a note stating that they decided to commit suicide. Dale broke 20 tranquilizers into Mike’s evening meal and watched as he ate it. Yet, when Dale checked on Mike one hour later, Mike was still alive. Dale panicked. He took a .38-caliber revolver from his desk and shot Mike, killing him instantly. Dale then went into the kitchen and took a handful of tranquilizers. He did not die. He awoke the next morning as somebody pounded on the front door. It was a neighbor who, seeing that Dale was dazed and confused, decided to call an ambulance and the police. The responding police officer conducted an investigation, and Dale was arrested and charged with the premeditated, 1st-degree murder of Mike. The prosecutor, although noting it to be a difficult case, pursued the case because she thought that no citizen had the right to decide when someone should die. Dale Parak pled guilty to 1st-degree manslaughter and was sentenced to 5 years in a maximum-security prison. (Note: This was the lowest sentence that could be given to a defendant convicted of his crime.) •What is your personal definition of “justice”? What is the formal definition of “justice”? Do you believe that “justice” was served in this scenario? •What is the state definition of the charge that you would file as the prosecutor against Dale? Did Dale commit each of the components and elements of the crime? The elements for 1st-degree, premeditated murder are 1) the unlawful killing; 2) with malice aforethought; 3) of another human being. Explain how each element was or was not committed. •According to the definition of justice you provided, was this sentence just? Why or why not? •If you were the prosecutor in this case, would you have charged Dale Parak with any crime? With 1st-degree murder? Why? •If you were the judge in this case, how would you have sentenced Dale Parak? Why? Please make sure that you provide academic or real-life samples in criminal justice to support your opinions.

Project description
The idea that “correlation does not imply causation” is arguably one of the most important ideas to understand in an applied statistics course. This idea applies to any statistical study, not just explicitly “correlational” studies, including ANOVAs and t-tests.

One example that illustrates this issue is the following finding: There is a positive correlation between the number of murders and the number of churches in a given city. Although it is possible that the presence of churches drives people into a religious frenzy and increased the number of murders, the most plausible explanation for this is the following confound: population size. That is, the higher the population size, the higher the number of murders and the higher the number of churches.

Another example (using a “t-test-like” design): There is a higher incidence of suicidal behavior among people who see psychotherapists than among those who don’t. Rather than conclude that seeing a therapist makes you more likely to want to kill yourself, it seems more plausible that people who are depressed or otherwise mentally ill (“the confound”) are more likely to both see a therapist and engage in suicidal behavior.

Recall that one way of improving our ability to make a causal inference (by ruling out confounds) is to randomly assign experimental units to the treatment conditions, rather than merely measuring/recording the “conditions” or “groups.”

For the following paper, address the following prompts:

1) (a) Give another example of a study (hypothetical or real) in which there is no random assignment and a “spurious correlation” like the above examples (in either a correlation/regression or t-test/ANOVA study), and (b) name and explain why the confound better accounts for the association/difference.

2) (a) Give an example of a real study/topic/relationship in which there has been no random assignment (because of ethical or practical reasons), yet there is general consensus that there is a causal relationship, and (b) explain why we are generally confident in there being a causal relationship.

Finally, 3) (a) Give an example of a study (hypothetical or real) in which there is random assignment, yet a causal inference would still be misleading, and (b) say why inferring causation would be misleading in this case.

The Pacific series

Project description
Here is my little tutorial on how to write a
movie review- – –

1)Basic plot, outline the characters and storyline as a form of the introduction.
2)Talk about the characters, personification, interaction and development throughout the film.
3)Discuss the good and bad points of the film:
A)camera work, effects, angle
B)acting good and bad
C)introduction and ending of the film – – – was it creative? Imaginative?
D)violence, sex, language: – – – needed? Wanted? or unnecessary?

A.Actively watch the movie – – – Yes, recognize that movie watching is a passive activity. Watching a movie isnt something you do, it is something that happens to you. However, if you want to write a good review you have to learn to look at movies with a critical eye. This means you need to pay attention to everything, and I mean EVERYTHING. Notice how the actors are placed in each shot, the setting, the camera angles and the music. All of these elements play a role in the story.
B.Take NOTES – – – but remember Summarize – – -this is important……Think about those papers you have to write for a college lit class. The professor didnt want you to just tell him what the book was about but wanted you to break down the themes in the book and how they related to the plot, the characters, etc. Well the same is true for a movie review. A good movie review will examine the themes or ideas the movie raises . . . talk about how well or not so well the movie executed those themes and ideas.
C.Point out the pros and cons – – -No movie is perfect and rarely is any movie all bad, so take the time to talk about what the movie does well and what it does not so well. Dont be afraid to state your opinion. Have a balance of serious analysis and humor. Deadly serious reviews can be quite stagnant, whereas reviews that continually focus on humor come off as amateur and un-analytic.
D.Finally go on-line and punch in the question, How true is the film, .and put the title of your film in . . . See what is said about.what is true and what is pure fiction.

Films for Review: These are just a very fewthere are hundreds to choose from . . . do a little research.
If you know a film that should be on this list – – – e-mail me with your suggestion . . . give me a detailed synopsis of the film.

Time perception as we age

Project description
Post a thorough response to the questions.
In mathematical modeling, inverse proportionality (http://mathworld.wolfram.com/InverselyProportional.html) plays an important role. Remember that direct and inverse proportionality (http://deltamonk.hubpages.com/hub/Direct-vs-Inverse-Proportionality) are related but different. In direct proportionality, as one item increases, the corresponding item would also increase, and vice versa; and in an inverse proportionality, as one item increases, the corresponding item would decrease, and vice versa. This video explains both direct and indirect proportionality https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=92U67CUy9Gc

Many people find that time seems to pass more quickly as you get older. So, the older you are, the shorter a year seems. Let’s model this experience mathematically. Let’s theorize that your perception of a length of time is inversely proportional to your age. We will investigate together and determine as a group if we think this is a good model of the true experience.

Let’s use ptime as the variable for your perception of a length of time, and use age as the variable for your age.

1. Our theory is that your perception of a length of time is inversely proportional to your age. Using the variables above, how would you state the theory in a mathematical equation?

2. Using this theory, how long will a year seem when you are two times older than you are now? To investigate, let ptime1 be how long a year seems now, and let ptime2 be how long a year will seem when you are twice as old. Pick a number for ptime1 (maybe a year feels like 157 days to you, for instance), and then calculate ptime2. Pick a number for ptime1 that is different from other students.

3. Compare your ptime1 and ptime2. What is the relationship between them? Would this relationship change depending on how old you are now? Take a look at other student answers. Do you see a pattern? Can you prove that pattern mathematically?
4. Let’s say that ptime1 is how long a year seemed when you were one year old. Let’s say ptime1 = 365 “time units.” Using age as our x variable and ptime as our y variable, use an online graphing tool (http://my.hrw.com/math06_07/nsmedia/tools/Graph_Calculator/graphCalc.html) to graph our theoretical mathematical model of how your perception of time changes over the course of your life.

5. Use “Settings” within the graphing tool to create a window that covers a typical human lifespan (for age) and a reasonable span of “time units” (for ptime). Attach a screen shot of your graph with your post. (You can use your Print Screen key to capture a screen shot and paste it into a Word Document).

6. Do you think our theory is an accurate model of what you experienced over the course of your lifetime so far? If so, why? If not, why not?
