Project description
Watch the 2005 film Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room, directed by Alex Gibney. The film is available at the UM library, on Netflix, Amazon, cable on-demand, and other sources. Plan ahead to ensure you have time to view the film at least once before beginning your paper.

Essay Prompt:
There are numerous examples of ethically ambiguous practices featured in the film. These practices may include actions, affirmative statements, omissions and/or schemes. Identify and explain one such practice. Include a brief description of the parties involved, how the practice worked, and why it was ethically questionable. Then, answer the following questions utilizing the framework of the moral philosophies discussed in class and Chapter 6 of the textbook:
Identify the moral philosophy upon which the parties seem to have relied to justify their actions. Define that philosophy and explain how it led them to act as they did.
Select two alternative moral philosophies that might have led the parties to a different result and, for each one, include a definition of that alternative philosophy and an analysis of how the actors would have acted had they utilized that moral philosophy. Also discuss the likely outcome of acting in accordance with each such alternative philosophy.
Your answer should be written in essay format; in other words, it should not be divided into individual answers to the above questions. There is no need to consult sources beyond your textbook, your class notes, and the film itself. Your essay may not exceed 600 words and should be double-spaced, utilizing Times Roman 12 point font and 1 inch margins. Please indicate the exact word count at the top of the paper. You are to turn in a hard copy of your Analytical Paper, no later than the start of class on April 11th. Your Analytical Paper must also be submitted via the designated Blackboard/Safe Assignment drop box under the Assignments tab by the same date and time as the hard copy. Hi Jack,
Thanks for the example of your company- let me add some more aspects from their Six Sigma implementations for GE.
Jack Welch, CEO of GE launched Six Sigma in mid 1990s and labelled it as the most ambitious task the company had ever taken (Welch, 2001 cited in Black & Revere, 2006). The process started by nominating a team of Master Black Belts who were to lead changes. Training was required to measure process output, to analyse process inputs, to enhance processes by altering inputs and to control processes by controlling inputs (Hendricks & Kelbaugh, 1998). Welch (1996 b cited in Henderson & Evans, 2000) remarked that GE chose doable performance targets and within companys capabilities but raised sights up to the next level towards higher goals.

By implementing Six Sigma, GE has achieved remarkable results:

Improved performance and financials after investing $ 380 in Six Sigma, majority was for training, benefits have resulted from increased productivity ($ 700 million), (Paul, 1999 cited in Henderson & Evans, 2000). Also, in 1997, GE Medical System saved $ 40 million (Conlin, 1998 cited in Henderson & Evans, 2000). GE operating margin went up to 15% from 10 %.

Improved customer satisfaction which was evident in shipping of 20 energy management systems 100% and on targeted date as compared to shipping six systems per year and poor delivery on time before 1997 (Bolze, 1998 cited in Henderson & Evans, 2000).

Improved product development which was evident in increasing lifespan of tubers in CAT scanners to four times as compared to earlier lifespan (Conlin, 1998 cited in Henderson & Evans, 2000). Product development cycles improved and within three months (as compared to one year), new internet-based management information products were introduced (Bolze, 1998 cited in Henderson & Evans, 2000).
