Project description
Watch the 2005 film Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room, directed by Alex Gibney. The film is available at the UM library, on Netflix, Amazon, cable on-demand, and other sources. Plan ahead to ensure you have time to view the film at least once before beginning your paper.

Essay Prompt:
There are numerous examples of ethically ambiguous practices featured in the film. These practices may include actions, affirmative statements, omissions and/or schemes. Identify and explain one such practice. Include a brief description of the parties involved, how the practice worked, and why it was ethically questionable. Then, answer the following questions utilizing the framework of the moral philosophies discussed in class and Chapter 6 of the textbook:
Identify the moral philosophy upon which the parties seem to have relied to justify their actions. Define that philosophy and explain how it led them to act as they did.
Select two alternative moral philosophies that might have led the parties to a different result and, for each one, include a definition of that alternative philosophy and an analysis of how the actors would have acted had they utilized that moral philosophy. Also discuss the likely outcome of acting in accordance with each such alternative philosophy.
Your answer should be written in essay format; in other words, it should not be divided into individual answers to the above questions. There is no need to consult sources beyond your textbook, your class notes, and the film itself. Your essay may not exceed 600 words and should be double-spaced, utilizing Times Roman 12 point font and 1 inch margins. Please indicate the exact word count at the top of the paper. You are to turn in a hard copy of your Analytical Paper, no later than the start of class on April 11th. Hi Jack,
Thanks for the example of your company- let me add some more aspects from their Six Sigma implementations for GE.
Jack Welch, CEO of GE launched Six Sigma in mid 1990s and labelled it as the most ambitious task the company had ever taken (Welch, 2001 cited in Black & Revere, 2006). The process started by nominating a team of Master Black Belts who were to lead changes. Training was required to measure process output, to analyse process inputs, to enhance processes by altering inputs and to control processes by controlling inputs (Hendricks & Kelbaugh, 1998). Welch (1996 b cited in Henderson & Evans, 2000) remarked that GE chose doable performance targets and within companys capabilities but raised sights up to the next level towards higher goals.

By implementing Six Sigma, GE has achieved remarkable results:

Improved performance and financials after investing $ 380 in Six Sigma, majority was for training, benefits have resulted from increased productivity ($ 700 million), (Paul, 1999 cited in Henderson & Evans, 2000). Also, in 1997, GE Medical System saved $ 40 million (Conlin, 1998 cited in Henderson & Evans, 2000). GE operating margin went up to 15% from 10 %.

Improved customer satisfaction which was evident in shipping of 20 energy management systems 100% and on targeted date as compared to shipping six systems per year and poor delivery on time before 1997 (Bolze, 1998 cited in Henderson & Evans, 2000).

Improved product development which was evident in increasing lifespan of tubers in CAT scanners to four times as compared to earlier lifespan (Conlin, 1998 cited in Henderson & Evans, 2000). Product development cycles improved and within three months (as compared to one year), new internet-based management information products were introduced (Bolze, 1998 cited in Henderson & Evans, 2000).

Work place motivation

Project description
workplace Motivation
In the background materials you read about some very traditional theories of motivation such as Theory X and Theory Y, and the hierarchy of needs. But one trend that has received a lot of attention in the media is that of weird or offbeat methods to motivate employees. The recent movie The Internship is set in the odd (or googly) workplace culture of Google. Zappos Shoes even mentions weirdness in the list of corporate values.
CashLinq , a financial services firm, is famous for their Nerf gun battles in the office. Eric Ryan, found of the highly successful soap company Method, was known to go to extremes to motivate employees such as dressing up as a chipmunk or holding impromptu office dance parties. Other examples of unorthodox motivation techniques may include unusual perks such as health insurance for your pets, or allowing employees to ride scooters in the office.
But is this just a passing fad for trendy new companies, or there actually a method to their madness? For this assignment, you will be doing some research on these offbeat new motivation techniques and investigating whether or not these techniques actually fit in with standard textbook theories of motivation. Review the background materials, and then read the following articles and also see if you can find any other examples of bizarre or unusual workplace motivation techniques:
Alsop, R. J. (2010). The last word. Workforce Management, 89(10), 50. Proquest
Petrecca, L. (Dec. 30, 2011). Quirky perks for workers: Pet insurance, massages. USA Today Proquest
Quirky offices may inspire employees. (Dec. 17, 2010, Dec 27). McClatchy – Tribune Business News Proquest
Habib, M. (Oct. 7, 2011). Foosball? bah. employers dangle offbeat incentives. The Globe and Mail Proquest
Case Assignment
When you are done with your research, write a four to five page paper addressing the following issues:
1.Are these unusual motivation techniques more closely matched to McGregors Theory X, or his Theory Y? Cite at least one of the textbook chapters from the required background readings to support your answer.
2.Which of Maslows needs do you think these techniques address or do not address physiological, safety, belonging, esteem, and self-actualization? Cite at least one of the textbook chapters from the required background readings to support your answer.
3.Overall, what do you think the main advantages and disadvantages are of these new and unusual motivation techniques as compared to more traditional techniques?
Assignment Expectations
Answer the assignment questions directly
Stay focused on the precise assignment questions, don’t go off on tangents or devote a lot of space to summarizing general background materials
Make sure to use reliable and credible sources as your references. Articles published in established newspapers or business journals/magazines are preferred. If you find articles on the internet, make sure it is from a credible source.
Reference your sources of information with both a bibliography and in-text citations.
