Genre Translation

Project description
Targeted Skills (outcome 1&2): a clear understanding of the audience, ability to employ appropriate conventions for a specific rhetorical situation, recognizing and articulating the effect of your own writing

Your Task:

Part 1: Genre Translation

Pick one of the sample articles you used for genre analysis in SA 1 or another article of your choice, and translate it into a different genre. Think about the audience you are writing to and what rhetorical changes can be used to write effectively to the audience of a respective discourse community. For example, you can translate a lab report to a mini science fiction, or a menu to a commercial script. Pay attention to the length of the article (i.e. within two pages) so that its manageable.

Part 2: Writers Memo

This assignment is a chance to consciously practice rhetorical choices based on audience and genre. The main goal is to express that you tried to make conscious rhetorical choices with regard to audience and genre. As a part of SA 2, this informal piece of writing will help both you and me understand the choices you make as a writer. When you finish the main assignment (Part 1: Genre Translation), simply write a one-page note to me about your writing processwhich is to say, your thought process. Answer the following writers memo questions:
Why and how did you choose the audience and genre you did?
What rhetorical choices did you make to translate from one genre to another?
What genre conventions did you use and why?
How did your choices change between the two genres/audiences, and why did you make these changes?
What did you find most challenging about this assignment?
What do you think you did well and where could you improve?

Requirements (if any of these are not met, your assignment will not be accepted):
500-750 words total (2-3 Pages)
Heading, page numbers
Double spaced, 12 pt. Time New Roman font
A thoughtful Writers Memo in 250 words or more
An attachment of the original text (an article, an link, etc.), excluded from the word count

World Health Organisation declares Zika virus public health emergency

Project description
TOPIC 3: World Health Organisation declares Zika virus public health
emergency (by John Taylor)

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/feb/01/zika-virus-world-health-organisation-declares-globalhealth-emergency

Images of babies born with microcephaly are a hallmark of the way the epidemic of zika virus in Brazil has been reported since late 2015. Yet a causal relationship between zika virus and microcephaly has not been formally established. Nor has zika been linked to this condition previously, despite discovery of the virus more than 50 years ago.
Using original, peer-reviewed literature write an essay that addresses the following questions;
What did we know about zika virus before it reached Brazil?
Why have microcephaly and zika virus been linked only since the virus reached Brazil?
What scientific evidence is there that links zika virus to microcephaly and what other factors might explain the massive increase in microcephaly in Brazil.

Synthesis Essay on songs

Project description
A synthesis is a written discussion that draws on one or more sources. It follows that your

ability to write syntheses depends on your ability to infer relationships among sources – essays,

articles, fiction, and also non-written sources, such as lectures, interviews, observations.

As we discussed in class, the subject of love is the most written about in popular music. While

overall subjects vary, from falling in love, falling out of love, trying to fix the relationship,

breaking up, loving someone who does not love you, to finding true happiness in love in the

end, it generally has the same principle, love. It has been covered since the popular music

began. It has been covered in poetry before popular music even began.

Why do we want to constantly sing about this one subject? Why do we always want to listen to it

on the radio? Why does it even matter? This is for you to decide.

Choose five love songs, each from a different genre, and analyze them. Who are the

musicians? When was the song written (not just decade or year but when in the musicians life)?

How does the lyricist handle the subject matter in general? Is it a falling in love song, or is it a

break-up song? What emotions does it create in the listener? Why do you think the artist chose

those lyrics or tune?

You can even synthesize your own ideas, theories, or research with those of the songs you

have chosen. What experience do you have with the song? Why did you choose that song or

artist? How important is that song in your life? How does it speak to you as a person or a

musician or just a writer researching this idea? Did you listen to this song when falling in love, or

during a break-up? You can even interview some of your friends, or even perfect strangers to

find out what they the song means and whether they see the connection. Your primary purpose

is to show readers that you are familiar with the subject and are thus qualified to offer your own

opinions.

Write a well thought out synthesis essay on those songs. In the essay make sure you do your

background on the artist! His/her life in general! When was the song written, what were they

going through? You may use resources on what the artist says about the song in this

background portion only, but not in your synthesis of how the subject love is treated in the songs

you chose.

It would help if some of the songs come from different eras, but it is not exactly necessary.

Compare the way the artists wrote, the notes they chose, the words, and the exigence that

existed for that artist to decide to write the song. Also make other comparisons, like did it

become a hit or just a fan favorite? Did it make the artist money or was it just a way for the artist

to deal with the issues he/she was going through. Is it possible the artist sang it but someone

else wrote it? Is it also possible that someone wrote it to make a hit and that is the only reason?

Lastly decide for yourself why you think these and other songs are always in demand. Why is

love such a huge draw for people to write about? Why do people love it so?

The Genres:

You can choose from the following genres of music! The era/decade you choose the song from

is up to you!

Rap/Hip-Hop

Rock – From Classic to Modern

Classical – make sure it has lyrics

Hard Rock/Metal

World – this is an English class – you must have the correct translations if you use this category.

The final product: For each student:

1. A well written essay synthesizing the music, the meaning, others views on the subject or song,

and ultimately how it fits into your life. No matter what, start here!

MODEL EXAMPLE RESPONSE

Question: Why was President Andrew Johnson impeached and what impact did it have?

FACT/EVIDENCE: The textbook reveals that Johnson was charged with \”high crimes and misdemeanors\” on \”eleven counts of misconduct.\” We learn this week that Johnson opposed black suffrage and vetoed the Reconstruction Act of 1867, but that Congress overrode his veto. The Reconstruction Act of 1867 divided the country into military districts and provided specific instructions on how freed blacks would be allowed to vote in elections, but prevented ex-confederate leaders from voting. Johnson also suspended Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton. The impeachment did not bring down the president because Congress fell short of convicting him. The book states that the \”dissenting Republicans felt that removing a president for defying Congress was too damaging to the constitutional system of checks and balances.\” The impeachment did open the door for Ulysses S. Grant to become the next president (1). ANALYSIS and OPINION: Although the book does not specifically state what charges were brought against Johnson, it seems as though Congress wanted to punish him for his anti-suffrage views. It is clear that tensions were high during this period, and that the country was still trying to grapple with all the difficulties of the post-Civil War period. I am wondering if Congress was trying to get revenge on Johnson or whether there were actually any real crimes or misdemeanors. It\”s interesting how the ex-confederates were prevented from voting, but I guess this was necessary to keep them from coming back into power. I learned from the reading that during an impeachment, the House of Representatives serves as the prosecutor and the Senate is the court. I also find it interesting that the southern states were divided into military districts, but I guess this is what they needed to do to ensure that freed blacks could vote. It is amazing how many changes took place during the country at this time. To think that people who were slaves right before the war would be voting in just a few short years is amazing. QUESTION FOR THE CLASS: My question for the class this week is: Do you think there is any connection between the black suffrage movement and the women\”s suffrage movement that came later?

Aggregate Planning at In-Line Industries

Aggregate Planning at In-Line IndustriesIn-Line Industries (ILI) produces recreational in-line skates. Demand is seasonal, peaking in the summer months. ILI has forecasted the following demand in pairs of skates for their most popular line of skates for the next 8 months:  Month        Demand (pairs)March         900April           1500May            2500June           3000July            1400August       1000September   600October       400  The company will have 500 units in inventory at the beginning of March and would like to have 1000 units in inventory at the end of October in anticipation of increased demand during the holiday season. There are currently 6 employees, each of whom can produce 220 units a month in regular time. The cost of hiring an employee is $1200 and the cost of firing an employee is $600. Labor cost per unit is $15 if produced in regular time and $20 if produced in overtime. The inventory holding cost is $2 per unit/month. Backorders are assumed to have a cost of $10 per unit/month.  Jack Stoner, the production manager, heard about “level” and “chase” aggregate plans and would like to know which would be more appropriate in this case for the next 8 months.  Assume that you have been hired as a consultant and that your job is to respond to Jack’s questions by developing the two plans he heard about and reporting to him in a memo the results of your analysis. Which plan would you recommend? Make sure to include in your analysis, in addition to cost, non-financial considerations such as customer service and other qualitative operational considerations.  The memo should not exceed 3 pages including any displays. The write-up will be evaluated on both the analysis and the presentation. Part 2: Assume that Jack is also interested to know whether there is a production plan that would cost less than either the level or the chase plan. If you can find such a plan, include it in your report (you may use an additional page).
